Bursting with love for @sandplunch and our new mini doc in @nytcooking 🥲 I’d follow @kirstynbrewer into battle, and that’s exactly what happens every shift. In a world of bullshit jobs, it’s a privilege to work at a job with no bullshit. Feels like living in a time gone by, but it’s here, and it’s for you, it’s not going anywhere.

It’s been a strange, unsettling year. I’m thinking back to this last time last October, stepping into the tide at Nazare. The intense vacuum pull of its waves against my legs terrified me. I had never stood in a physical force so violent and shimmering.

I have been pulled into a reckoning with lack. God, what a joy to let my body rest in impotence. To feel horror, to wail, to have nothing left to say but “Okay, let’s try that again, but this time good.”

Thank you to my friends, my old swells, who held me in the tide. by @yokizzi

Stepping off the G train earlier this week, a stranger did a double take in my direction. I thought he was looking at someone behind me, but on the third take, I locked eyes with him. We both removed our headphones.

“Your writing is really good.”

“What? I’m sorry, do I know you? That’s so nice.”

“No, I’ve just read your writing.”

“Oh my god, wow. Thank you for stopping to tell me.”

He walked north, and I walked south, and that was it. Nothing like that had ever happened to me, but this nothing felt like something.

Today after work, I biked toward the Hudson River. It was a beautiful night and I didn’t want to go home. On a quiet, curving street, I saw the Cherry Lane Theater. “Hmm,” I thought. “I don’t think I’ve ever been there.”

A small crowd was gathered outside. 6:50pm, showtime in ten. I went to the box office, bought a rush ticket, and a box of sour candies. The stage was in the middle of the room. An usher informed me that because I was seated so close to the stage, I could not leave my seat once the play started. “No problem!” I said, munching on my candies.

“Oh,” he continued. “And because you are in an elevated row, in direct view of the audience, you cannot eat or drink either. It’s a two-person play, so we try to limit visual distractions.”

I turned toward my neighbors with a campy grimace. “Jesus,” I mumbled. “You can’t do ANYTHING here!”

They laughed and we started talking. All three of them had come to the theater solo, like me! Just as we were getting to know each other, the lights dimmed. Alone again we were, no intermission. But as soon as the play ended, we looked at each other and sighed. We talked about soulmates, and the meaning a person can have to us, and how meaning is held and released. It was clear that we had felt something together, even though we meant nothing to each other.

The G train was down, so I took the 7 and walked home across the Pulaski Bridge. At its midpoint over the water, I looked out toward the city, with its evening windows lit like tiny galaxies. And I smiled to myself, alone on that bridge, thinking about how a stranger, like an old flame, can be held and released. by @yokizzi

“Motherhood is, in Western discourse, the place in our culture where we lodge, or rather bury, the reality of our own conflicts. Of what it means to be fully human. It is the ultimate scapegoat for our personal and political failings, for everything that is wrong with the world.

What are we doing, what aspects of our social arrangements and of our inner lives, what forms of historic injustice, do we turn our backs on? Above all, what are we doing to mothers when we expect them to carry the burden of everything that is hardest to contemplate about our society and ourselves?

By making mothers the objects of licensed cruelty, we blind ourselves to the world’s iniquities and shut down the portals of the heart.” — Jacqueline Rose
