Photos from yesterday’s You Can Walk With Us No 6: Santa Monica + Venice

@mollfrylock planned a 12-mile walk, then shortened it to 9 miles because of the extreme temps. Called an audible as we were walking, and ended up walking between 6-7 miles (Strava tracked 381.54 miles, so maybe the heat affected her as well?) 😂

12 humans (including 2 supporters who hung with us for a bit) plus one fur baby who saw us off! Celebrated a birthday (HB, JP!) plus everyone shared a memorable birthday celebration, and we realized over 50% of us were born in October-December! 🎉

It was a scorcher - it was close to 100 degrees at the beach! Passed by a statue that looks like a penis from behind (Santa Monica Statue), hydrated ourselves at Cha Cha Chicken, had lunch at Holy Guacamole, and saw the public art sculptures “Clown Ballerina” and “A Resurrection in Four Stanzas."

Also learned some history about Santa Monica: (1) the famous Crocker Clock Tower, located near the 3rd Street Promenade, that stopped at 4:31am when the 1994 Northridge Earthquake struct; and, (2) through walking past Historic Belmar Park, came across a poster that commemorated the Black folks who lived in South Santa Monica from the 1920s and 1960s until it was decimated.

A million thanks to Mollie for planning this route, including finding shaded streets, plenty of places for us to hydrate, use the restroom, and eat! And thank you to all the walkers for their flexibility: we shortened the route plus changed the starting spot a day before the walk and then we shortened the walk as we were walking!

Here are the remaining walks in 2026 - link in bio if you want to receive email reminders and a calendar invite:
* Saturday, November 7th (No 7): Meet the Denas (Pasadena + Altadena)

*Saturday, November 21st (No 7.5, special edition): The Great Los Angeles Walk (Route 66/Santa Monica Blvd)

* Saturday, December 5th (No 8): location TBD by @yolandaenoch

Lauren Halsey's emajendat with Erykah Badu and DJ Pee .Wee (Anderson .Paak) at the Hollywood Bowl was a visual and musical maximalist dream! PLUS:

The Alchemist
Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Charles Gaines Collective featuring Black Nile and Devin Daniels
The Debbie Allen Dance Company
Dancers on skates
Yvonne Orji (host)

I don't know how they fit it all into 3 hours! 🥰

At one point during the show I thought about what those riding on The 101 were seeing! taken in Hollywood Bowl by @yolandaenoch

See you this Saturday, June 6th at 10am at the Highland Park Metro station (A Line)! We’ll be exploring Highland Park, including Eagle Rock and Occidental College. Big thanks to my coworkers @__postnobills and Anh for planning this route. 🥰

I shared three clues for the route in the last slide of the recap of our May walk, where we gathered to Walk the D [Line], then Rode the D, to celebrate the opening of section 1 of the D Line extension (L.A. Metro/public transportation). Did you figure it out?

There may be some hills, plenty of spots to replenish ourselves (and eliminate 🤣), so we’ll continue our walks at a leisurely pace. Total mileage is 8.7 miles.

If you’re driving, you should be able to find free parking.

Date: Saturday, June 6, 2026
Time: Meetup at 10am, take off around 10:15am
Address: L.A. Metro Highland Park station (A Line), 203 N Ave 58, Los Angeles, CA by @yolandaenoch

Photo from the fourth You Can Walk With Us on Saturday, May 9, 2026 where we got to Walk then Ride the @metrolosangeles D Line, from Union Station (downtown L.A.) to Beverly Hills. 11.4 miles walked, 9 people, plus 1 pet 🥰And we got to wear our Ride The D t-shirts!

We got to experience section 1 of the D Line extension, the three new lines that opened on May 8th. Almost 4 miles of underground heavy rail that now connects Koreatown to Beverly Hills. It’s mind-blowing that it’s only 4 miles between these two areas because it feels so much farther when you’re driving in traffic!

One thing I love most about walking is you get to notice, stop, and explore things that are often overlooked when driving or on the bus. As we were walking from the Wilshire/Fairfax station to Wilshire/La Cienega we noticed a small shop with artwork inside and decided to check it out. Turns out a writer (India Mandelkern) and photographer (Ken Karagozian) put together the photo exhibit and book “Wilshire Subway”, dedicated to the builders of the D Line subway extension. We got to meet the photographer and one of the supervisors involved in the construction of the extension. 🥰

I think about all the public transportation infrastructure projects that have reached conclusion since I moved to L.A. in February 2014:

* March 5, 2016: extension of the then-Gold Line (now A Line) from Sierra Madre
Villa to APU/Azusa.
* May 19, 2016: extension of the then-Expo Line (now E Line) from Culver City to Santa Monica
* June 16, 2023: Regional Connector opens, merging three lines (Gold, Blue, and Expo) to create a continuous A Line (from Long Beach to Azusa) and E Line (from Santa Monica to East L.A.)
* September 19, 2025: extension of the A Line to Pomona
* May 8, 2026: extension of the D Line from Koreatown to Beverly Hills

Our fifth walk is this Saturday, June 6th at 10am. Can you guess based on the clues in the final photo where we’re walking?

“The more time you spend doing something, whatever it is possible for you to do in your space in the world, the less exhausted you are by the onslaught of information that really wins when it can convince you that the only thing you can do is watch what is happening to you.” Tressie McMillan Cottom, Settle In with PBS News, Jan 20, 2026, https://youtu.be/QBu4AJ75dZA

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, looking for ways to do *something* in Los Angeles, and/or just want to be around a lot of caring and hopeful people, I invite you to join me this Thursday, May 7, 2026, for my org’s Story of Us LA event.

This gathering brings together voices from across Los Angeles, 11 leaders who are a part of our Systems Change Fellowship, whose orgs are tackling the root causes of Los Angeles’ most pressing social problems in order to permanently improve the lives of the people most impacted by those issues.

This cohort covers a wide range of issues and seeks to transform the system often by policy change, power building, community organizing, and campaigns to shift how we think about the issue.

At Story of Us LA, these 11 leaders will take the stage and share the personal journeys behind their work to transform our communities.

And, if you join us, perhaps you’ll find something to do.

I promise it will be a joyful and warm event.

Click through the slides to learn a little bit about the 11 organizations. From reimagining public education and advancing justice reform to championing resource redistribution and grief care, each story shines a light on what it takes to build a more just and liberated Los Angeles.

Hope to see some of you there. I’ll be working the registration/check-in area, say hi!

Traci at @thestackspod has created one my favorite podcasts, book clubs, and social communities, and I’m so glad she lives in Los Angeles. Her podcast is one of the reasons I started cancelling my streaming TV subscriptions…to stream less and read more!

Her in-person gatherings are the best, whether it’s a conversation with thoughtful, well-read people or social gatherings like her [unoffical] L.A. Times Festival of Books meetup at @reparations.club.

Watching/hearing her curiosity with her podcast guests is beyond encouraging: she has challenged herself to “get poetry” by reading a poetry collection during National Poetry month (and having an annual Poetry therapy session where she brings on several incredible poets to help us understand a poem) to reading a Toni Morrison novel every year.

And she asks the best and messiest questions on her show. 🤣 Congrats, Traci, Christian, Cherie, and Sahara on eight fabulous years of the podcast! 🥰

Photos from some of favorite in-person gatherings Traci has hosted over the last couple of years, including Stack The Shelves last May, where folks from Altadena and Pacific Palisades who were affected by the wildfires last year, were able to restart their book collections. Over 100+ people, vendors, authors, and publishers volunteered their time and/or products to make this day happen. The books were organized by genre to make it easy to find books, and there was food, support services, and even plants that were provided, at no charge, to our neighbors. There was a lady who was crying and so excited to find a children’s book that both her husband and son owned lost in the fire. It’s those things - books, plants, pictures, and pillows - that make a house a home and it was so freaking dope to be a part of this event.

Continuing my woodworking skillz-building by taking my second class at @lawoodshop. Last year I took their Intro to Woodworking class and left with a gorgeous cutting board that I use daily. Two weekends ago, I took a picture frames class and had the hardest time deciding on a photo to display (there are three inside it right now). 🥳

Since buying a boatload of power tools in 2022 to now, I have been cautious/scared about using the table saw. This picture frame was taught using almost exclusively the table saw (there was also lots of hand sanding), I feel 100% more comfortable using a table saw now.

Now all those tools I bought three years ago have been donated to @losangelestoollibrary - where I’m a Founding Member and Volunteer. They’re no longer collecting dust in my closets but being used by our members and I can borrow a table saw and other tools when needed.

On day two of the class, I was removing the tape that I applied after glueing the frame together…and three of my glued corners came apart (didn’t use enough glue). I was devastated for a second, but remembered that our instructors, Todd and Cam, said it was a possibility. Instead, I went to Cam who helped me put it back together and get caught up with the rest of the class.

Now I understand why picture frames cost so dang much!

I really want to get good at making picture frames - maybe even picture frames that have propagation tubes in them - and the mistakes I made in the class had me rethinking this dream. But everyday I look at this picture frame, I smile and feel so proud of myself for not giving up or being sad during the class. Maybe I’ll take the class again, or maybe I’ll go buy some milled lumber and try making another frame or two (I do have two already-printed photos that need a frame).

Have you attempted something, it didn’t go as planned, and still turned out beautifully? by @yolandaenoch

So excited about our 4th You Can Walk With Us…where we’ll be combining two things that I love: going on a long walk and taking public transit.

On May 9th, we will be WALKING the entire @metrolosangeles D Line and then RIDING the D. We will start and end at Union Station - four lines have stops here: A, B, D, and E - and it’s about 9 miles.

Why The D Line? Because on May 8th, section 1 of L.A. Metro’s extension of the D Line opens. When Section 3 opens (expected to open in Fall 2027), riders will be able to travel from Downtown LA to West LA in approximately 25 minutes, a modern miracle in L.A. traffic!

As usual, we’ll be walking at a leisurely pace, everyone is welcome to join (except ICE), and no one will be left behind. Photos include a view of all the existing and new stations as well as some of my favorite comments on the post where Metro announced the opening. 🚉🍆😝

Shout out to @godfreyplata and @thestackspod for correctly guessing where this walk will take us, and special appreciation to Traci for the inspo behing giving clues for the next walk! 🧩

Details + RSVP at the link in bio. RSVP not required, but I’ll email and send you a calendar invite with all the walk logistics.

Be sure to wear your “Ride The D” tshirt/crop top if you have one! Thank you, Metro LA, for taking the Reddit user’s suggestion and making this shirt a reality. The D is coming!

Some moments from the third You Can Walk With Us, this month we explored Silver Lake! 💛

When I decided to organize a monthly long walk, my mind went into overdrive trying to answer every question I had. The biggest were figuring out where to walk and, since this is a long walk that would take hours, where to eat and where to stop for restroom breaks.

I told/tell myself to focus on the next walk only, instead of multiple walks in the future.

About a week before that first walk (Griffith Observatory) my friend @_nadiaayad offered to find food and restroom stops - even though she couldn’t make the walk - and this act of kindness changed a lot for me.

I realized I could just ask my friends to help me plan a walk in their neighborhood! 🤪

So I asked Nadia if she would help plan walk #2 in her neighborhood (Koreatown) and not only did she plan a fun route, she found a lunch spot and several places to use the restroom. So now the process is to do a prep walk to get familiar with where we’re walking and to answer the questions: where are we eating and we are we peeing?

My friend @jupeloggia planned this Silver Lake route. While doing our prep walk, she pointed out Night + Market as a potential lunch spot. I went to bookmark it and saw I had already bookmarked it with the note “From the book The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory.” @jasminepics

The Proposal is one of my favorite romance novels and it was my pandemic re-read (I’ve read it at least 10 times). 🥰

Unfortunately it was closed but I wonder if Nik and Carlos still go there (it was their first date spot)! lol

Join us next for our Walk on Saturday, May 9th at 10am (join us for all or some of the walk, will take 5-6 hours).

Where are we walking? There are three clues on the last picture; write your guess in the comments!

Don’t mind me, just riding through Koreatown, downtown L.A., USC Fraternity & Sorority Row, Exposition Park, Leimert Park with thousands of folx on bikes, scooters, and roller skates this past Friday, 3/27.

A multicultural, multiracial, and intergenerational gathering at night. The music, the scenery are the best.

@lacriticalmass is the last Friday of every month, meet at 6:30pm (always in Koreatown, Wilshire/Western), roll out at 7:29pm, 20+ miles. Join us next month, it's a very chill pace (my average pace was 9mph)! by @yolandaenoch
