McGee Creek Trail and climbing area cleanup day was a success! Though it may have been a bit hot for some folks (101 degrees lol), we still managed to make a great day of it yesterday. We visited every major climbing area of the park and cleaned trash off the trails, from the base of the walls, and also from the parking lot!
In addition, we still managed to get some good climbing in and put up some new first ascents, which I will add to MountainProject and Kaya, soon!

Here were some of our key takeaways from our cleanup:

-The highest volume of trash tends to be in the parking lot. This is likely not all trash left by climbers, but keep an eye out when you visit and please pick up any trash you see when you are getting your gear ready to hike to the walls!

-Drinks and Climbing Tape tends to be what we find left behind near the walls. It can be easy to forget a plastic water bottle or a can you’ve finished when you’re tired, and tape can be hard to spot when looking around at the end of the day. We recommend bringing a plastic bag with you and placing any trash like tape or other waste into it right away when done with it to ensure climbers leave no trace.

-Lots of tick marks were left behind on popular climbs. You don’t spray people down at the gym without asking, right? Some climbers seek out the opportunity to figure out how to climb something themselves. Please try to scrub away any chalk ticks when you are done climbing! If someone wants your beta, they’ll look up your sends online!

10 years with this guy wasn’t enough. anyone who ever had the privilege of spending time with him can attest to how special he was. i may think this way because he was my best friend, but i’ve truly never met another dog quite like him. with his dopey eyes and crooked leg, he made an impression on so many people- especially my family. i didn’t know how complete our family could feel until he came into, and then left, our lives.

10 years ago, during a 3 hour trip back to DFW, this sweet guy became a part of my world as he slept in my lap. the other night, he left my world as he slept with his head in the same place.

while i’m devastated, this pain is something i’m grateful for, as i wouldn’t have it if i had never had him. every tear i’m to shed over this sweet boy will be worth every wonderful moment that i spent with him and all the unconditional love he brought into my life.

Bogey- thanks for giving your life to me and our family. thanks for being there every time i returned home, no matter how long you had to wait. thank you for taking me away from my problems and giving me love when i needed it the most, even if you didn’t know i needed it. thank you for the walks, the sniffs, the cuddles, and the memories. thank you for being my brother.

a weekend full of laughs, smiles and sends. never do i feel more connected to my creator and my humanity than when i visit these places with people i love.

just another shoutout to the @theblokclimbing for letting me set some routes and gain a better understanding of movement! outside of this endless pursuit of climbing mastery, not much is more fulfilling than creating a sequence from scratch and watching others figure it out.

also just want to shout them out for all their efforts in building an amazing community and preserving the culture of old school climbing. if you want to challenge yourself, make friends, or even play magic the gathering, pull up to the blok and you won’t regret it! by @yolowen

@theblokclimbing does this really cool thing called Member Set Week where they give climbers the chance to set routes and get some BTS action of the whole process. So, after 4 years of dying to do this, I finally got an opportunity to do some commercial routesetting and set my own bouldering problem!

I just wanna take a sec to rant about the Blok and how epic this gym and its community is. Again, I’ve worked at and frequented TX climbing gyms for the last 4 years, but never before have I seen a gym that lets their members try out routesetting. Says absolutely everything about this gym and the effort they put in to their community.

Give this special place a visit when y’all get the chance. If you’re interested in climbing and/or don’t want to go to the gym alone, hit me up and I’ll make a visit with you! by @yolowen
