The Three Sisters Loop backpacking trip has it all. Beautiful forests, alpine lakes, a waterfall, crystal clear creeks, as well as lava fields, burn scars, choking ashy dust, and a mountain summit that rivals Mount Doom (I’m looking at you, red mile.)

How is October half over?! Life is flying by. I knew having a high school senior would make this school year busy, but I hadn’t expected it to be so emotional. Social media has definitely taken a back seat, but I had to pop on for all my Tall Trees friends! This is in Oregon’s Cascades, and Caboose is wearing a poncho because it had been snowing and raining on us 15 minutes earlier. June in the mountains means being prepared for all weather! by @yoradventures

It isn’t the most scenic social media picture, but I love what this represents. We’re out camping this weekend with the groups we volunteer with and it’s so great to see all these kids out here playing. They have built bridges and rope swings. One group of kids has had a big imaginative game going for hours now. Another group is out on a five mile hike. More are on a nature scavenger hunt. Kids are doing the cooking, and the washing up! It’s a lot of work to organize big events, but once you get out here and see all the kids having a blast outdoors, it’s all worth it. I feel so lucky that we get to do stuff like this. by @yoradventures

I might have missed national sons day yesterday, but I figured it would still be ok to pay tribute to my adventure buddies. I’m so grateful to have these kids in my life. They are strong, smart and make me laugh all the time. Like any kids they also get annoying and make mistakes, and so do I. I have hiked a thousand miles with them, visited 48 states and 43 national parks. They have grown from tiny hikers who needed jellybeans to make it a mile, to strong boys who carry the heavy stuff and summit mountains. I love trips with all of them together, and I love one on one trips.

Being a mom isn’t always easy, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Tall trees, tall mountains and the next generation of baby trees. Why can’t summer be longer?! I already miss being out there where the only sounds are wind, footsteps, and that little aggravating squeaking noise my backpack sometimes made no matter how I adjusted it.

Today I was supposed to be on a sea cave kayaking tour in Channel Islands National Park. I had reservations made last spring at the Scorpion Canyon backpacking campground for three nights, and OG son and I were going to do a kayaking tour one day, and a snorkeling tour the next.

Then our water heater totally busted this summer. The cost of replacing it meant that one of our planned trips had to go. It came down to Channel Islands or a Universal/Knotts Berry surprise trip. If you know me, you already know which one I would prefer! I can’t even ride roller coasters because they make me motion sick. Yet we went to the theme parks. Why? My boys backpacked with me over 100 miles this summer, even though they would have preferred staying home. They helped neighbors buck hay and stack firewood. They deserved a trip that was all about their wants! To go on rides that literally spun them around upside down and backwards, and eat fried foods, and do it all over again park opening to closing. Was it my idea of fun? Nope. But they supported my dreams of backpacking on the PCT, so this was my turn to give them a trip that was all about them.

Channel Islands, sorry I didn’t get to meet you this year, but I think you’ll understand that my time with my boys is fleeting. I will (hopefully) have many more years ahead to explore this beautiful area. by @yoradventures

1,000 miles. I didn’t even realize we had hit that milestone until I was calculating how far I hiked this summer. I have hiked 1,000 miles with my kids since I began tracking our hikes in 2020. When the pandemic hit, there was no way I was going to survive being shut up inside the house with four young and rambunctious boys. Caboose was preschool aged, so I figured it was time to start family hikes longer than a mile. Most of our hikes were 2-3 miles that year, with our longest being 6 miles. We bought a trailer and started traveling once we realized that the schools weren’t going to reopen in the fall and that my husband would continue to work remotely. Before we knew it, we had hiked 100 miles in 10 months! Since then, I made it a goal to hike at least 100 miles as a family every year. I have an ā€œadventure bookā€ where I logged the date and mileage of every hike we have taken these last seven years.

I feel so thankful for our healthy bodies, that we live in such a beautiful area, and that a silly goal I made ended up saving my mental health. All that time spent outdoors has made us stronger both physically and mentally. I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane at the beginning of our family’s outdoor adventure journey in 2020. by @yoradventures

Our first fall hike didn’t go quite as planned. I made it seven miles before stumbling and straining my hip flexor. Oh the joys of hiking in your 40’s. I didn’t even fall, but apparently it was enough to mess me up. After my amazing summer of climbing mountains and backpacking all over, to be taken out by tripping over a rock is rather humbling. I limped my way 3 more miles to get back to the truck and then my big boys continued on solo to complete their 20 mile adventure in seven hours! So proud of them! taken in Clear Lake, Mckenzie Headwaters Recreation Area in Oregon by @yoradventures

200 miles on trail between Memorial Day and Labor Day! Five different backpacking trips. Almost 6,000 miles driven. Six states visited. 165 of those hiking miles were with my kids, the rest were from a solo trip I took to the Eastern Sierra. I meet four strangers from the internet and had a blast, then visited Yosemite solo. My goal of hiking all of Oregon’s PCT is now 18% complete. I took the boys to three different theme parks as a thank you for all the hiking and backpacking they did with me. I got to camp in two very special limited permit sections of the PCT: Jefferson Park and Obsidian Creek. We were able to travel to Utah and see lots of our family, and family traveled to us to camp on the Oregon coast. I was able to lead a mini backpacking trip for a group of teens, many of whom hiked further than they have ever gone before. I saw sunsets over mountains, forests, sand dunes and the ocean. I laid awake scared in my tent many nights because I was sure there was a bear outside. Alpine lakes were swam in, and I’m pretty sure I have never been so filthy in my life as I was on our 63 mile backpacking trip.

Summer 2026, you were one for the books. I have never been so busy, or so fulfilled. My heart was incredibly happy to spend so much time outdoors, especially when I was with my family. Watching my boys accomplish hard things was incredible. Watching myself do hard things, especially solo when no one would know if I quit, was empowering. by @yoradventures

It isn’t the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen, and they aren’t the most impressive or photogenic tall trees amongst the sand dunes. Of all the adventures I had this summer, this memory is special. I had the privilege to help take a bunch of teenagers camping on Oregon’s coast. On this evening we climbed into the dunes to watch the lunar eclipse. The kids then ended up playing the most ridiculous games together and listening to their laughter ringing out made me so grateful that this is my life.

Happy Tall Tree Tursday everyone! (If you are wondering what Tall Tree Tursday is, go check out @i.am.bekka and look at her stories for all of us who celebrate our love of trees every Thursday.) taken in Honeyman State Park by @yoradventures

I made it!!! 63 miles and 11,322 feet of elevation gain over five days backpacking the Three Sisters Loop. I have never done something this physically challenging before. I am sore and exhausted. I hardly slept at all. Yet I am so stinking proud of myself! Speaking of stinking, I don’t think I ever smelled so much or have ever been so dirty, despite jumping in alpine lakes and soaking in spring-fed streams. I think I have all the sap out of my hair now. I saw shooting stars and the Milky Way above my tent in the wee hours of the morning (thanks, insomnia) and a doe with three fawns. Pikas chirped at us, a fox darted across the trail in front of us, and chipmunks tried their best to steal from us. I’ll do another post with more on the hike, but for now I am so ready to sleep in a nice soft bed. taken in Three Sisters Wilderness by @yoradventures
