We’re overjoyed to announce that we are the @artfund Museum of the Year 2024! 🎉

It’s been fantastic to be part of a shortlist of brilliant museums across the UK. Creativity, culture and play have such an important role in children’s lives and we’re excited to continue sparking imaginations in young people.

We’ll be investing the prize money in supporting the education and creativity of early-years who live in low-income households across the Thames Estuary.

Celebrating our other finalists: @skiptownhall, @DCADundee, @mcrmuseum and @nationalportraitgallery

We’ll be marking one year of Young V&A this Saturday for a day full of free joyful events and music, check the link in our bio ❤️

This little piano can play you a tune, but not in the way you would expect…🎵

It’s a music box! Made with a musical clockwork mechanism underneath its top, it gives the illusion the keys are playing whenever the mechanism is operating.

Meet The designer 🌱

Join us in The Shed to meet designer, researcher and artist Christie, a graduate in Environmental Architecture from the Royal College of Art. Exploring how play, making and spatial design can help us create a world that works for humans and our more-than-human neighbours, Christie is bringing their practice to Young V&A to tackle the birdhousing crisis!

During their time at the museum, Christie will be working with young people and drawing inspiration from our collection of miniature habitats to co-create sustainable new homes for our fine-feathered city neighbours.

Tiny book, big story.

Inspired by Alice in Wonderland, these extraordinary miniature ‘books’ are a contemporary take on the children’s paper peep show. They open out like an accordion to create an illusion of depth, so the vivid scenes of Alice’s adventures unfold before your eyes. 🐇

Peep shows have been popular since the 19th century, and artists are still playing with the format today, like the one in this video.

See the full film to explore more miniature books via the link in bio.

Bear hugs 💖

These colourful cuties began as greeting cards in 1981, before evolving into toys, TV stars, and movie icons. Each of the original 10 had its own “belly badge” personality, from Grumpy Bear’s cloud to Tenderheart’s heart.

How many Care Bears did you have? 🐻

A Handmade Rupert Bear 🧶🐻

This beloved character was created in 1920 by Mary Tourtel, and the illustrator, Alfred Edmeades Bestall, helped bring the bear to life. Rupert has become one of Britain’s best-loved children’s characters. Recognisable in his distinctive red jumper and check trousers, Rupert has appeared across generations of books, illustrations, toys and television.

This 1982 hand-knitted Rupert Bear soft toy captures that familiar character. Made entirely in garter stitch, the toy has a pale yellow body, a bright red jumper and mottled yellow and peach-coloured trousers finished with a black check pattern. His facial features and individual fingers are sewn by hand, giving the toy a wonderfully tactile, handmade character.
