Nobody becomes a rare disease advocate by accident.

For Dr. Maria O'Hanlon, it started with one boy. One diagnosis. One conversation she couldn't shake.

She went back to the lab and finished a PhD on mitochondria in Parkinson's disease. She dedicated it to him.

Dr. Maria O'Hanlon will tell you straight: the classroom won't get you there alone.

She's a research manager in mitochondrial disease now, but she credits her path to something most students overlook. Placements. Shadowing. Actual time in actual labs getting her hands dirty before she committed to anything.
