Yovela Debesay, M.A.

Yovela is a development economics professional working at the intersection of economic policy, research, and diaspora engagement. Her work focuses on how global capital flows, institutional structures, and cross-sector partnerships can support inclusive and sustainable growth across Africa and the broader Global South. She has contributed to research and policy work across international development, U.S.–Africa engagement, and multilateral spaces, including experience supporting programs and initiatives related to economic inclusion, policy dialogue, and global affairs.

Yovela is also the Co-Founder of the Global Climate Cooperative, an initiative advancing community-led climate solutions and more equitable models of sustainable development across the Global South. She is a changemaker committed to advancing development approaches that are locally grounded, economically sound, and centered on long-term impact.

Girls Between Worlds takes on the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF). 🇺🇳

Our goal wasn’t just to attend HLPF. It was to leave with insights, stories, and conversations worth bringing back to this community.

Ajiri spent the week following conversations centered on SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, exploring discussions on water security, access, and resilience. Meanwhile, Yovela focused on SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, one of this year’s HLPF priority goals, diving into conversations on governance, institutions, and inclusive development.

Same forum, different perspectives, and that’s exactly what Girls Between Worlds is about.

We’ll be bringing you inside the rooms where these conversations are happening, sharing what we’re learning, who we’re meeting, and why it all matters across the global stage.

next week, i will be speaking at the @unitednations during the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. 🇺🇳

our conversation will center on youth-led delivery of SDG 8 and SDG 16 in the digital and AI-driven economy, sharing perspectives from my work across economic development, policy research, and youth leadership.

looking forward to representing not only the organizations i am fortunate to work alongside, but also the communities that have shaped the way i think about development, opportunity, and Africa’s future.
