In the weeks leading up to the show, artists met for sessions shaping the set together. Unplugged is an opportunity to build relationships across experience levels. Working with the its ok*’s network of musicians, UNPLUGGED nurtures mentorship, shared learning, and a sense of creative community that lasts beyond one night. ✨ Meet the UNPLUGGED research team! The incredible crew of YRC II research fellows ( Sosun, Aaron, Kybuky and Nia) have put together a beautiful set of interludes that act as transitions between each set. Sosun takes us through the BLUE(s), Aaron with the cymbals and bells of PURPLE, Kybuky brings us into the RED, and Nia helps us groove and jam through GREEN & YELLOW. Today we move into 🌴 GREEN & YELLOW ☀️ —where the energy shifts to feel from inside the body and the room.
Green opens into an intimate, bodily register: the heat of the basement, the sway and body roll, the sweat, the eyes closed, the hypnotic bouncy pulse of riddim that wraps around you. Julian Henriques recounts Stuart Hall saying that Jamaican culture is a sonic culture—a world where sound structures space, time, and feeling. That idea extends deep into dancehall, lovers rock, and reggae, where the body is the first instrument and the riddim the ground on which we meet. The slow, repetitive, minimal groove becomes a kind of meditation. The beach, the yard, the crowded party are sites where folks gather to sway, to breathe, to live inside the moments of song. The 🌴GREEN & YELLOW☀️ set asks us to slow down, relinquish ourselves to body roll, release tension, close our eyes and get lost in the riddims’ invitation to move and free up yuhself.

Today we move into 💥 RED 💥 —where hip hop’s pulse resonates, raw energy, technological innovation, and political critique, turning public knowledge into sound by reporting social issues and life experiences from the ground. Chuck D. of Public Enemy famously has called the genre “Black America’s CNN”, ushering in the birth of a new set of performance and sonic styles that evoke a refusal to accept the logic of the world as it is.
This set runs along the ideas of Tricia Rose and Murray Forman who teach us Black music is a sonic cartography of the ’hood, the block, and everyday spaces where Black life is both constrained and improvised. Honouring producers like J Dilla, Timbaland, Missy Elliott, and sounds of cities like LA, Toronto, New York, and Houston, the RED set channels how producers turn nothing into something—heralding new worlds out of discarded and forgotten fragments to bring the noise!
