A day at MASS MoCA with good friends, big art, and even bigger inspiration.

There’s something special about wandering through creative spaces with people who make you laugh, reflect, and see things a little differently. North Adams was the perfect backdrop for a day of art, connection, and friendship. Grateful for friends who make room for beauty, conversation, and a little adventure.

Aurelio, this time last year.

I have read a lot of what others have said about my friend. He was a mentor, influential, and to some, he was Billy. He was also a son, a brother, a cousin, an uncle, a boss, a colleague, etc. To me, he was my friend. One year ago today, we were drinking in a bar in NYC.

Today, I’m reflecting on a life cut short. “Yvettey time.” “I love you, Yvettie.” “You know, Curtis…” “That would be AMAZING.” “Hey, Yvettey!” I’m not sure when he started calling me Yvettey. Was it when we started calling Curtis “Curtie”? Did one come before the other, or were they both created on the same day by our group of friends? However it happened, it’s a name the group including Aurelio will always make me appreciate. Nicknames do that. They make you feel included. Aurelio included me, and that made me feel so special.

This summer has been challenging for many reasons, and I find myself looking back at old text messages from Aurelio. He was such a good cheerleader.

I met Aurelio in September 2000. While he was one of my first supervisors, he quickly became one of my first friends in Boston and ultimately, a chosen family member here in Massachusetts. He introduced me to my roommates, “the boys,” taught me how to eat sushi, made me love an appletini, and helped me find my joy in a cappella music, Broadway, and even work itself. As one of my core friends throughout my adult life, he has been and will always be deeply impactful. He was generous in ways I admired. He lived for experiences. Food and drinks were important, and he lived with no regrets. He showed up for all my big events and my little ones: my graduation, my wedding, my marathon runs, my birthdays.

Always there. Always Aurelio. by @yvelez101
