Your boy is officially skipping warmups!

In all seriousness…earning my purple belt signifies a number of things to me, but mostly that I didn’t give up on something immensely difficult, despite having several moments of wanting to walk away.

I’d like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff + coaches at @atosjiujitsuhq, @10psouthbay, @electrum_performance, my training partners, and my wife @ohdredredre who’ve all helped me break through boundaries I once could have only dreamed of.

Purple belt baby!🔥🤼🥋💥

Three weeks ago, I hurt my back pretty badly. Spent 5 days severely hunched over, struggling to stand up straight and walk. Took the losses this past weekend, but glad I decided to step up regardless and test a few things I’ve been working on 🤷🏽‍♂️.

Since arriving at @10psouthbay I made a conscious decision to dive into areas I genuinely struggled with instead of the same ole’ things I had always focused on. Also joined a wrestling school @sdmovewrestling . Started learning takedowns. Started learning to pass. Started scrambling more. Started getting comfortable in positions I had avoided for years. Somewhere along the way, I even started enjoying the leg lock game.

A few years ago, I would have been looking for every opportunity to pull guard. Now I’m excited to wrestle, fight for positions, pass, scramble, and push the pace if my back lets me.

Six years on the mats, and honestly, I feel like I’m only now developing my foundation. Many of the things I’ve been learning are my new favorite parts of jiu-jitsu.

Didn’t get the W, but confirmed my back is still technically working. Medically speaking, we’ll call that a win 🤣. taken in Del Mar, California by @zaaheeed

FINALLY made the leaderboard at @electrum_performance after all these years.

Of course it had to be the vertical jump. 31.0”…not bad for an old man.

All that time playing basketball and volleyball growing up finally came in clutch. taken in Electrum Performance by @zaaheeed

Wraaaslin’ work continues. Working a few single leg finishes along with a nice lil club underhook uchi pick.

@timmyjmac so smooth with it as usual. I’m still buffering ⏳but we are making improvements 😅. taken in Electrum Performance by @zaaheeed

Thinking of the old crew today and reminiscing of all the rounds, laughs, competition moments, and details we sharpened together on the mats. Switching schools doesn’t change respect or friendship—that part stays solid.

To all my former teammates—I’m still in your corner and always down to train. If you ever want to get some work in, cross-train, or just catch up, my door’s open. Hit me up anytime. And somebody please give Hank a break from these front head lock subs. 🤣 taken in Electrum Performance by @zaaheeed
