Rapha’s CEO Fran Miller is out after two years, and the brand that once rewrote the rules of cycling apparel is facing a hard reckoning. In this episode, we talk with two guests about how Rapha got here and whether it can turn things around. First up is industry expert Juansi Vivo. He walks through the red flags: falling revenue, growing losses, CEO turnover and the £200M Walton acquisition. He argues that Rapha’s real asset was never the product. It was the culture, and that culture faded as the company chased growth. Then brand strategist @zachheffner looks at it through a branding lens. He explains how Rapha became a true “love mark,” balancing exclusivity with inclusivity, and why wider distribution and cost-cutting can turn brand love into a sense of betrayal. We’re rooting for Rapha. But the signals aren’t good. Link in bio. #cycling #ciclismo #velo #fahrrad by @zachheffner
Started behind the lens. Ended up behind the brand. Cam op → DP → Director/Producer → Creative Director → Brand Strategist. Every step looked like a pivot. But every step was actually the same move, learning to see MORE. And the education that changed everything came from three brands and each one gave me something different. Nike gave me the playbook. I didn’t build anything there. I just executed. But watching the best storytellers in the world use sport to move people (not just sell to them) rewired how I think. Emotion as architecture. Story as strategy. I studied every single frame. Cerveló gave me the translation challenge. They had a strong brand identity and genuine conviction in their technology. But they were telling the wrong story. White papers. Tech specs. Data sheets. All of it was true. None of it had feeling. My job was to earn their trust and flip the narrative — away from what the bike does and toward what it feels like to ride one. That’s when I realized: strategy isn’t always about building from scratch. Sometimes it’s about hearing what a brand is actually trying to say and finding the right language to say it. Easton handed me the keys. They had the product dialed. The creative? Wide open. Do your thing. That’s where everything came together: Nike’s storytelling principles, Cerveló’s lesson in brand translation and full creative control to build a world from nothing. The campaign broke records. More importantly, it showed me what I was actually doing all along. I was doing brand strategy before I knew what brand strategy was. Most strategists come up through design: logos to decks to positioning. They work toward meaning. I came from the opposite direction. I started with the question every filmmaker asks before they roll: what do I want the audience to feel? And I worked backward into brand. The title changed. The obsession never did. #brandstrategy #creativedirector #nike #cervelo #easton by @zachheffner
Being a creative means never truly knowing where our next step or next bit of inspiration will come from. We give our all to the process, to the idea, to the bigger picture. At times you can’t see the runway. But I promise you, your good work and pure intentions today become the magic you’ll make tomorrow. Keep going. Keep growing. Stay curious and be patient. The agency I worked with described this as the best shoot in their 25 yr + history. I want to break down why - because there’s a real lesson here for anyone building a brand. The work is only ever as strong as the team behind it. Sounds obvious. It isn’t. I see brands every day try to shortcut this - one person wearing five hats, hiring for budget over fit, treating creative as a checkbox instead of a craft. It always shows in the final product. What made this @bcclarkjewelers shoot different was simple: the right experts in the right seats. A creative team that came in sharp and prepared. Shout out to the client @bcclarkjewelers for locking in the concept and finding an amazing location in @aspenranchok Big ups to @themeansteen for finding amazing talent and wardrobe. The super talented @ganipinero on camera. Someone I’ve collaborated with for years because his eye for luxury, light, and storytelling is genuinely unmatched. A true pro. Our talent @merrik.ashlynn and @ashley_ehrhart knew the assignment and were beyond amazing. My job as creative director wasn’t to do everything. It was to cast the room, hold the vision, and let world-class people do what they do best. That’s the real work of brand-building — knowing what you’re great at, knowing what you’re not, and surrounding yourself with people who fill the gaps better than you ever could. Great brands aren’t built by one person with a strong opinion. They’re built by teams who respect each other’s craft. #craftinginevitability #zachheffner #brandstrategy #brandethos #craftinginevitability by @zachheffner
Storytelling Win #237 - Immediately after landing I found myself at FedEx field for my first producing gig with @nlsetv for sit down with @commanders president Jason Wright. A former @nfl player, Jason is the first Black president in NFL history and the youngest team president in the league. We were breaking new ground as a network focused on telling stories of marginalized communities and amplifying athletic voices the mainstream media often left outside the established circles of influence. I had many wins during my time at Next Level Sports & Entertainment, but my first was one of my most memorable and impactful. It was an honor to sit down with Jason and tell his story. #creativedirection #brandstorytelling #brandstoryteller #brandstrategy #brandstrategist #zachheffner #zachheffnermedia by @zachheffner
Here’s a new edit on an a shot from my portrait session with The Great One. We only had about 15 minutes with him and need multiple looks. Originally this was shot as a landscape shot, but i really like the re-edit as a portrait. I was fortunate in my early years of brand storytelling to be able to name Nike as a client. My office in LA was across the street from Nike’s west coast office and I was able to create content for a number of their verticals - women, running, youth, football and others. More than just a great client, Nike taught me brand strategy. Every shoot for Nike was planned, methodical and with the end customer in mind. Their level of market understanding was (and is) off the charts. I’ve learned a lot since, but my formative years as a brand storyteller was rooted in the Nike way of brand storytelling. Thank you to the entire @nike west team for treating me like one of their own. #nike #brandstrategy #craftinginevitability #zachheffner by @zachheffner
Some calls you don’t forget. Kylie Minogue’s first-ever American tour. Her first-ever U.S. concert. She wanted someone to capture history - and she picked me. I’ve spent my career thinking about what makes an image last. Not just sharp, not just beautiful… lasting. The kind of frame that becomes the frame. The one that ends up in the documentary, the retrospective, the book. That’s the assignment when an artist of this caliber trusts you with a first. You don’t shoot a moment like this. You honor it. You read the room, you read the artist, you read the light, and you stay out of the way of what’s already iconic. The job of a creative director behind the lens is to disappear into the work - to let the subject be the subject and let history do what history does. Forever grateful, Kylie. Promo shot for Easton Lacrosse when they launched their ground braking Raptor helmet. I loved my time creating for a fresh new offering, like Easton at the time. #lacrosse #commercialphotography #sportsphotography #lacrossepromotion #eastonlacrosse #raptorhelmet by @zachheffner
People often overlook all the facets of creation - all the things that add up to allow you to manifest something that did not exist a moment ago. Creatives make it look easy…but it’s not. Our love and passion for the creative process allows us to push through the boundaries of uncertainty, fear, insecurity, etc in order to bring our vision into reality. I want to thank my partner @christinamrios for the amazing work she put into this project - she made taking the photos the easiest part by far. And our talent @javanne was amazing to work with and brought such a light to the project. Next time you see a photo, advert, movie, painting or hear a song … or anything brought into the world through the creative process (almost everything) please appreciate all the hard work and boundaries that the creators pushed in order to birth that Art… #creativeprocess #aisthetes #aisthetescollectif by @zachheffner
Years ago I was in Kona shooting the Ironman World Championships for Cervélo. I was setting up at the finish line, locked into the plan: track the Cervélo athletes, catch their crossings, deliver the brief. As I was getting into position, @janfrodeno came down the chute. Olympic gold medalist. About to win his first of three Ironman World Championships. Not who I was there for. But I had the camera up. And I made the frame. Here’s what that day taught me: you don’t have to be there for the moment to be ready for the moment. Preparation, instinct, awareness - those don’t belong only to the assignment in front of you. They belong to whatever the universe decides to put in your viewfinder. Show up early. Scout the angle. Know your gear. And then stay open - because the shot you were sent to get and the shot history needed you to get aren’t always the same shot. Be ready. Stay present. The universe is more generous than you think. Magic is happening all around us, being prepared just helps you see it better 🤍 #zachheffner #creativedirector #konaironmanworldchampionship #janfrodeno #brandstoryteller by @zachheffner
