How to throw an office holiday party on a small budget in Vancouver.

Settle the format first — lunch or evening, the office or a rented room — before you look at prices. Then put most of the money into the food: for a team of 25, that's usually a local caterer who delivers lunch ready to serve, with a dessert table or a coffee cart if there's anything left.

A weekday lunch, noon to three, keeps everyone in daylight. The office is the cheapest room you have; a community-centre room is the next step, and rooms go fast in December — if you're reading this in October, send the first emails this week.

The company covers the food, the team brings the moment: a shared playlist, a gift swap with a cap, five minutes to say thanks. And if alcohol's on the list, check the permit before the plan is set.

Fall engagement photos in Vancouver: October is the month for the light.

The leaves get the attention, but the real reason is the light — low and warm by mid-afternoon, with no waiting until nine at night for the sun to drop. And B.C. no longer turns its clocks back, so sunset doesn't jump an hour earlier in November.

Gardens with maples turning crimson and gold (and the photo rules that come with them), Spanish Banks and the seawall with the mountains across the water, old-growth forest where the light goes early, and a rain plan for when November gets there first.

A local photographer already knows where the light falls at five — ask them before you settle on the spot.

Halloween in Vancouver this year: the nights with a live band.

Halloween lands on a Saturday, so the big nights are spread over three weekends instead of one. Most lists give you haunted houses — here's where somebody is actually playing.

Sat Oct 17 · Forrolloween, forró in costume, with @bomtomband at @thealcovelounge on East Hastings. 8pm–2am.
Sat Oct 25 · Vampcouver 6 at @astoriapub.yvr.
Thu Oct 29 · CHULO's Halloween edition, same room.
Fri Oct 30 · @cabralsfault, rock and pop with a spooky twist, 8pm, $20 + fee.
Sat Oct 31 · The Dark Eighties, 9pm–2am, costume or goth attire.
Sat Oct 31 · Parade of Lost Souls by @dustyflowerpotcabaret, free, Vernon and Napier, 7–10pm. Little Souls at 7.
Sat Oct 31, daytime · Halloweenie at @kidsmarketgranvilleisland, 11–5, free.

There's a lesson in there for your own party too: live music changes a room faster than décor does, and a costume contest is the cheapest programming there is.

Brazilian party food in Vancouver: Gimme Bakery.

Coxinhas, brigadeiros, cheese bread and the cake that took over the menu. Lais and Nathalia met almost ten years ago and run Gimme together today. They started small, with morango do amor that Nathalia delivered herself by scooter around downtown. Most of the menu can be ordered the same day, and the party kit can be ready in a few hours.

Vancouver has a new place to start planning a celebration: the Zamala Journal is live.

Guides for whoever's planning — how to hire a caterer for 20 to 60 guests, the 7 questions to ask a wedding photographer, when to hire what, season by season. Community — what fall looks like on Vancouver's tables this year, the rise of the micro-wedding. And Real Celebrations — real nights in this city, written down, with every person who made them credited by name.

Eleven stories so far. The first Real Celebration is ours: a birthday on Granville Island that turned into a show. More on that next week.

It's all at zamala.ai/blog (link in bio).

And it's built to include yours. Celebrated something in Vancouver this year — a wedding, a 40th, a baby shower, an office party? Tell us about it and we'll write it down, with the people who made it credited. → zamala.ai/blog/share-your-story

An event coordinator.

But also: the one with the timeline nobody else sees — who knows the cake lands at 2, the photographer needs the 6pm light, and the toast always runs long. The reason the host gets to be a guest at their own party.

A night I’ll never forget. We turned my birthday into a show, and almost a week later I can still hear that room singing.

Rapha and I had this project in our heads for long time. We spent weeks putting this setlist together, and honestly that was half the joy. Songs we love playing together. Songs that pulled us straight back to our roots, our childhood, our teenage years. By the end we weren’t picking music anymore, we were picking memories.

Then the room filled up with people we love, and everyone sang. Every song. The only word I have for that feeling is a Portuguese one: gostoso demais.

Thank you @zameen.art for the space — charming, intimate, exactly the way we wanted it.
Thank you @botecobrasilcanada for the yummy coxinhas and snacks and @gimmebakery for the delicious prestígio cake. Both so good.
Thank you to our band and our special guests, who were in this from the first rehearsal: @andrea.lobato_, @betacunha, @paula.faustinob, @mario_silva_guitarrist. The stage is a special place for us, and sharing it with friends this talented makes it better and a lot more fun. Like I always say: PALCO É VIDA. The stage is life.

And to every friend who came and sang with us: you were the party. Huge thank you.

The room was small this time, but there are more shows, more celebrations and more festas coming soon. See you at the next one. taken in Zameen Art House by @zamala.ai

It's my birthday today 🎂 and here's a part of me that doesn't fit in the founder bio: this is where I feel most alive — on a stage, mic in hand, in front of a room in Vancouver.

I've spent years on the performing side of events. So has Raphael. We know what it's like to be great at your craft and still hope the right people find you. That's the whole reason Zamala exists — built for the people who make celebrations happen, by two who still do.

Here's to many more years of building it. 💜

"Keep it simple" means make it look effortless. "We're easygoing" means opinions by the third option. "Whatever you think is best" means they trust you completely. You speak host fluently — Zamala just helps them find you.
