It’s time to show your true colors! 🌈

Festival of the Trees holds a deeply personal place in my heart. As an FIU Interior Architecture student, I was honored to receive a scholarship made possible by this event. For more than 20 years, I have continued to give back—participating as a tree designer and helping organize this extraordinary celebration of creativity, community, and design education.

Now, I’m calling on South Florida’s designers, architecture and design firms, and industry partners to join us for the 2026 Festival of the Trees: “Chroma in Motion.” Design a tree, become a sponsor, purchase tickets, or help spread the word. Your support directly funds scholarships and educational programming for the next generation of FIU Interior Architecture students.

Let’s show our true colors and invest in the future of design!

Interested in participating or sponsoring? Contact Marlene Glaver at mglaver@fiu.edu.

THE DESIGN BEHIND OVRTWN CORNER
.
After months of designing, documenting, and reflecting, I’m excited to finally share the completed OVRTWN Corner project.
.
Located in Miami’s historic Overtown neighborhood, the 3,300-square-foot space was designed around culture, commerce, and community. Working alongside the project partners, I developed a colorful and energetic environment rooted in Overtown’s history, architecture, music, creativity, and resilience.
.
From the custom Overture wallpaper and mobile kiosks to murals, historical displays, repurposed furnishings, and spaces for gathering, each element was thoughtfully designed to tell a piece of the neighborhood’s story while supporting how the community gathers, creates, and conducts business today.
.
But the story extends beyond these photographs. I’ve also created an OVRTWN Corner Design Project Booklet, written a new blog exploring the design process and my personal connection to Overtown, and curated a Sounds of Overtown playlist to accompany the experience.

Objets, People, and Places

My latest creation, Triune Blossom Ceramic Objet, was inspired by my recent travels to Morocco, where I was captivated by the plethora of mini tagines and saucers used to serve daily meals, creating a special sense of formality around eating.

I initially envisioned three forms resembling chickens, with cavities to hold small items. Instead, I allowed the clay to develop as it pleased, and the exploration led to an object resembling an orchid—very akin to my design aesthetic.

My favorite part is its versatility. It can serve as a saucer for small dry foods or wrapped candy, a candle holder, or wall décor. I can’t decide which is my favorite. Can you?

I created the piece this past July while attending the inaugural Legacy Craft Class. Together, we created a legacy table where everyone placed a special keepsake, explored legacy as it relates to our businesses, and created our own ceramic pieces.

Lately, I’ve been attending more intimate workshops where I can learn, make, and further develop my love of craft and design alongside other creatives. What I’ve enjoyed most is the sense of community and synergy shared among familiar faces and strangers.

As I reflect on my journey through Italy this past summer, I compare it to shifting gears as I begin another semester teaching at FIU School of Architecture. Reconnecting with former students and meeting new ones illustrates the road we both share—one of continuous learning and growth.
.
The magnitude and responsibility of the task at hand can be compared to the grandeur and enormous scale of Italy’s historic buildings, ruins, and cities.
.
I consider the challenges faced by the warriors and conquered people who traversed the arena of the Colosseum; the faith found within the corridors of St. Peter’s Basilica and Piazza del Duomo that we’ll need to get through the semester; the trickling waters of the Trevi Fountain, likened to the tears that may be shed during all-nighters; and the trepidation of walking Venice’s narrow docks and making the steep climb to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa—all experiences that, like this semester, ultimately lead to growth.
.
Despite the unknown, we will all blossom like the beautiful colors found in Burano, Italy, proudly reflecting on our accomplishments and proving to ourselves that we are capable.
.
Here’s to new beginnings and a new semester!

Introducing TropiCabana Chic.

Inspired by Pattern Curator’s recent Coastal Hideaway trend story, I began thinking about what coastal design looks like through a distinctly Miami and Ze Haus lens.

While my work tends to embrace bold patterns and saturated color, TropiCabana Chic explores a softer side of my TropicArt Nuvo design philosophy—combining coastal calm, tropical botanicals, organic textures, and complementary shades of blue and orange.

The mood board features spaces, wallpaper, artwork, and inspiration from my own design world—proof that coastal doesn’t have to mean predictable.

Design Your World 2026 concluded on a high note, with a cohort of 15 high school students completing this two-week summer program introducing them to the world of commercial interior design.

Hosted at the Florida International University School of Architecture, an affiliate sponsor, the program is supported by the IIDA South Florida Chapter ( @iidasfc ) and the FIU Interior Architecture Department, and led by Adjunct Professor Kenzie Leon Perry.

During the first week, students learned the fundamentals and design process of commercial interior design, participated in presentations by industry vendors, toured Gensler and Wynwood, and individually designed a commercial interior for a micro-business housed within a shipping container. Several students exceeded expectations by constructing architectural models to accompany their projects.

During the second week, students collaborated on the design of a Cultural Community Center envisioned for the Overtown–Wynwood corridor. Together, they developed a multi-story concept featuring a community lounge and library, public health clinic, food bank market and eatery, and temporary housing—demonstrating how thoughtful design can positively impact communities.

Now in my fifth year facilitating Design Your World, it continues to be an honor to help introduce the next generation of designers to the profession.

The program concluded with final presentations at the BEA Gallery, where students showcased their work before parents, faculty, and design professionals. This year, one exceptional participant was recognized as the program’s Rising Design Star and awarded a brand-new computer.

Each year, parents share how Design Your World inspires their children to think more creatively, build confidence, and discover the possibilities of interior architecture as a future career.

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, industry partners, guest speakers, volunteers, and everyone who helped make this year’s program possible. Your continued support is helping shape the next generation of designers. taken in Paul Cejas Architecture Building by @ze_haus

Sometimes you travel thousands of miles only to discover a reflection of yourself.

One evening in Rome, I wandered into Mama Shelter Roma expecting nothing more than a great meal. Instead, I found myself surrounded by a space that felt strangely familiar.

As I looked around, I couldn’t help but notice design elements that echoed the aesthetic I’ve been cultivating at Ze Haus for years:

• Natural-toned flooring
• Lush greenery and botanical elements
• Warm earth tones
• Black-and-white hand-painted murals
• Botanical prints
• Blush pink accents
• Bold patterns
• Natural rattan furnishings
• Palm leaf motifs

Seeing these similarities wasn’t about claiming the design—it was a reminder that inspiration has a way of connecting creative minds across continents.

Travel doesn’t just expose us to new ideas. Sometimes it affirms the design language we’ve already been developing.

That evening reminded me that the spaces we create are often shaped by the same universal appreciation for nature, craftsmanship, texture, color, and storytelling.

Perhaps that’s why this restaurant felt so familiar.

It felt a little like home.

This week marks my fifth year facilitating Design Your World, presented by IIDA at Florida International University. As I introduce students to the fundamentals of interior design, I’m reminded of the sketches I created while traveling through Morocco and Italy, studying the architecture and craftsmanship that inspired me.

Sketching is one of the most valuable—and completely free—tools I encourage every aspiring designer to embrace. During this trip, I found myself sketching more than ever before. In those moments when I paused to draw, everything else slowed down. I began noticing details that I might have otherwise overlooked—the proportions of a building, the rhythm of architectural ornamentation, distant conversations, and the vibrant energy of the places around me.

Unlike the hurried gaze of a tourist, sketching required me to observe with intention. Each line helped me better understand the space, while also giving me the freedom to experiment with different drawing styles and techniques. It’s a creative process that unfolds naturally, revealing new discoveries with every sketch.

As our Design Your World students begin their own creative journeys over the next two weeks, I hope they discover what I did—that sometimes the most meaningful design lessons come not from rushing to the next destination, but from slowing down long enough to truly see.

I’m looking forward to witnessing their growth, curiosity, and confidence as their ideas come to life.

From the Marrakech Medina… to Miami

When I traveled to Morocco, I wasn’t just looking for a beautiful souvenir—I was searching for a piece that would become part of my everyday life.

After visiting multiple rug shops throughout the medina, I found this one-of-a-kind handmade Amazigh runner featuring earthy greens and rich chocolate browns on a soft neutral background. I knew its colors and geometric pattern would complement, rather than compete with, the bold elements already in my home.

Once I returned to Miami, I styled the rug in my hallway alongside my Human Nature wallpaper, original artwork inspired by Coconut Grove, and a rustic ladder to create a space that reflects both my travels and my design philosophy.

One of my favorite things about collecting pieces while traveling is that they continue telling a story long after the trip is over. Every time I walk through this hallway, I’m reminded of the artisans I met, the medinas I explored, and the inspiration I brought home.

If you’ve ever wondered how an interior designer incorporates a handmade Moroccan rug into a modern home, I’ve shared the entire process on YouTube.

🎥 Watch “How I Styled My Moroccan Rug” — link in my bio.

Question: What’s the most meaningful item you’ve ever brought home from your travels?

Some projects take years to come full circle.

Back in 2020, a client fell in love with my TropicArt Nuvo wallpaper but wanted it in a custom color palette to complement her home. Together, we created a version that was uniquely hers.

Fast forward to today... installation has finally begun, and seeing the design come to life is a reminder that great design is timeless. In fact, she recently ordered an additional roll to complete the space.

One of my favorite parts of the design process is helping clients personalize a pattern so it feels like it was created just for them.

Would you customize your wallpaper, or choose it exactly as designed?
