Happy publication day to NO ONE'S LOOKING by Brooke Davis (@thisisbrooked), out today with @hachetteaus!

From the internationally bestselling author of LOST & FOUND comes a comedic and uplifting novel that brings home the secret rage of women through a lively suburban family and the brawling love between two middle-aged sisters - who no one is looking at anymore.

'They've seen each other before,' the nurse says, spookily, enigmatically. Vicki and Susan look at each other, they just look and look.

When Susan first meets Vicki, her new baby sister, she puts a hand on her tiny forearm, and Vicki stops screaming. Just like that.

If only it were so easy forty-five years later.

Susan has always been the quiet, nice sister, but her husband's sudden demand for an open marriage - and a rather large purple object she'd forgotten about - provokes a slow-dawning epiphany: being the 'good' girl doesn't always mean it's good for you.

Just down the road, Vicki listens at the door of her seventeen-year-old daughter's room - her only child - and is shocked at what she hears. Her old urge to scream builds. As she listens to a true crime podcast and doom scrolls the news headlines, she can feel a terror building in her bones. She can't help believing something very bad is going to happen.

It's January in suburban Australia - stinking hot, the sound of tennis and cricket on telly, the threat of bushfires in the air. Vicki is right, something is unravelling. Rage, desire, fear, wonder (and the occasional nipple) are unleashed. In the aftermath, will Susan and Vicki ever find out what's possible when no one's looking?

NO ONE'S LOOKING is an original, wise and life-affirming novel that shows it is never too late to change who people expect you to be. by @zeitgeistwriters

Because I'm Not Myself, You See by @arianejbeeston, published by @blackincbooks, 2024.
'Blistering, beautiful, true' —Susan Johnson

'Ariane Beeston's honesty, poetry and wisdom will save lives.' ––Anna Spargo-Ryan, author of A Kind of Magic

'Both riveting and informative, this is an unflinching look at what it is like from inside postpartum psychosis.' ––Anne Buist, Professor of Women's Mental Health, University of Melbourne, and co-author with Graeme Simsion of The Glass House

'A memoir like no other ... sing[s] with mordant humour on the page' —Geordie Williamson

'A beautifully written, raw and important memoir for anyone who has had a baby' —Daisy Turnbull

'This book . . . stands on the cliff and dives off with one brave breath. Ariane Beeston gives voice to what many women experience at varying levels and in doing so will make others feel less alone.' Megan Rogers, author of The Heart Is a Star

📖 A frank, hopeful and darkly funny memoir of postpartum psychosis and recovery. 'I do not know who I am anymore or where I have gone ...'

Ariane Beeston is a child protection worker and newly registered psychologist when she gives birth to her first child – and very quickly begins to experience scary breaks with reality. Out of fear and shame, she keeps her delusions and hallucinations secret, but as the months pass Ariane gets worse. Much worse. Finally admitted to a mother and baby psychiatric unit, the psychologist is forced to learn how to be the patient.

With medication, the support of her husband, psychotherapy and, ultimately, time, Ariane rebuilds herself. And she also begins a new chapter working in perinatal mental health, developing resources to support other new mothers.

Because I'm Not Myself, You See is a candid, often humorous memoir of motherhood and madness, interwoven with research and expert commentary. It's the story of the impossible pressures placed on new mothers and how quickly things can go wrong during 'the happiest time of your life'. It's also about life on the other side of serious illness, trying to make sense of what doesn't make sense, and finding humour, beauty and joy when things don't go according to plan. by @zeitgeistwriters

The Servants is the electrifying debut novel by @roannagonsalves, publishing in February 2027 with @summitbooksaus! This novel is a meticulously researched reimagining of the true story of George Jarvis, an Indian servant to Governor Lachlan Macquarie, and other Indian servants in the early NSW colony - surfacing the histories of trans-Indian Ocean slavery that colonial Australia has long left untold.

...

What could I tell you about George Jarvis except that he was an enslaved black Hindoo servant, born in India, one of many, what do I care ... I will tell you our story in the language of your time ...

The year 1810 in the colony of New South Wales: George Jarvis has just arrived with his master, the newly appointed Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Having been in Macquarie’s service all over the world for more than a decade, George now wants permission to return to India to find his mother.

In Sydney, he is reunited with Shammy, who was bought along with him at the age of five. While George is torn between yearning to see his mother and compulsive loyalty to the Scotsman who has been like a father to him, Shammy is a fierce advocate for freedom. She too is a servant, but she bows and scrapes to no one. A woman of immense intelligence, she has big plans and the determination to carry them out. But there will be unforeseeable consequences of her fiery ambition …

This highly original, audacious novel reimagines a crucial period in Australia’s history from the perspective of the vanquished, and tells a wider tale of the slave trade across the British empire. It repaints a whitewashed era in all the richness of the servants’ heritage and coats it with a wickedly witty takedown of the colonisers and their hypocrisy.

‘Here is early Sydney as you’ve never seen it. Roanna Gonsalves’s vision is original and thrilling. This novel is an astonishment. A firework. A gamechanger.’ - Michelle de Kretser, winner of the Stella Prize and 2 Miles Franklin Awards by @zeitgeistwriters
