zerOclassikal’s celebrated Free Flow Classikal concept returns to Karamel London as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival, with an exceptional lineup featuring violinist Preetha Narayanan, Dhanraj Pandey on tabla, and guitarist Justin Quinn, who performs alongside renowned sitarist Jonathan Mayer for the first time since The Teak Project.

This edition of Free Flow Classikal brings together some of London’s finest improvising musicians to explore the rich and expressive worlds of raag and taal. Join us for a moving exploration of South Asian Classical music through the medium of free improvisation, across music genres perspective-ed from south Asian classical forms. No boundaries. No limits!

One week to go until we’re back in our studio for the next Artist Salon, where all south Asian classical musicians are invited to share ideas, collaborate and explore future projects in the south Asian classical music space.

Our aim is to build a welcoming community where musicians feel comfortable experimenting with new ideas, performance techniques, and connecting with like-minded artists. Each session will be led by a designated musician who will share their performance approaches, compositional ideas and inspirations.

Raag Bihag notated for violin and tabla by our Artistic Director Jonathan Mayer in 2021 as part of an Arts Council commission.

The work was conceived to give Western musicians an accessible entry point into South Asian classical music, removing the need for extensive formal training by providing a fully notated score. It forms part of a wider set of ten pieces written under the same commission, each exploring similar cross cultural ideas based on raag and taal.

Each raga is accompanied by a tabla (percussion) accompaniment - available as score sheets and a video recording. Perfect for musicians, educators, and enthusiasts alike.

Earlier this week, we launched our monthly Artist Salon at the zerOclassikal studio to a great success.

Led by our Artistic Director and sitarist Jonathan Mayer, the session brought South Asian classical musicians together to improvise and try out new ideas in a relaxed setting.

Our Artistic Director Jonathan Mayer sat down with the legendary sitar player to talk about his remarkable journey as a musician, from discovering the sitar in 1960s London and travelling to India to study the instrument, to performing, recording and teaching across the UK and beyond, and collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry.

Our London recording studio is open to South Asian Classical musicians who are looking for a space to rehearse or develop a new project.

We’re especially keen to support artists creating new and experimental work within the South Asian Classical music space. We can offer the studio at a low cost and, for some projects, we may be able to offer the space free of charge.
