SAD BOOK — ZURICH

This Thursday, SAD BOOK comes to Kino Toni at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

A screening of four moving-image works:

Rather than presenting the works as a single thematic selection, the screening brings four distinct artistic approaches into one space — from geological and human time, to landscape, memory, gesture and personal history.

The screening is followed by a research conversation with Zoe Chun, opening onto the wider SAD BOOK project and its next chapter in Seoul this November.

The Zurich audience will also be introduced to artists participating in the Seoul project: Ahram Kwon, Florian Dombois and Rhona Byrne.

Hosted by the Research Focus Transdisciplinarity at ZHdK.

Michael Günzburger (*1974, Zurich) works in drawing and printmaking. His approach, which is mostly based on collaborative practices, uses artistic methods to open up poetic spaces that foster interdisciplinary discourse and inform teaching. He is more interested in processes—what artists do when they produce art—than in individual works. He is currently the director of the research project “Thinking Through Printing” at the FSP and a lecturer at the CSP, both within the Department of Graphic Arts (DKV) at ZHdK.

Viviana González Méndez is a Colombian visual artist with studies in fine arts, and art theory in Colombia and Argentina. Her artistic and investigative work focuses on themes such as the relationships we establish with places, cartography, and ecology issues mainly through media such as sculpture, drawing and installation.
She has experience working as a lecturer and researcher in higher education in Colombia. She has also exhibited her artwork in solo and group shows in various countries in Latin America and Europe, including Bolivia, the USA, Germany and Switzerland.
As a PhD candidate is currently developing the PhD project “Moving in and through Different Landscapes. Nomadic tactics to create Installations/Landscapes” in the programme Fine Arts/Cultural theory from ZHdK (CH)/University of Art and Design Linz (AT). In this project, she explores how some elements of Latin American traditions, related to how to experience, understand and establish relations to places, can be deployed in a European context to create place-related installations.

Enrico Mario Hörster studied political science (B.A.) and sociology (M.A.) at the University of Kassel until 2020. During his studies, he worked as a student assistant on the BMBF-funded research project “Forum Privatheit.” In his thesis, he argued for a practice theory of film.
After completing his studies, he worked as a lecturer at the University of Kassel. Topics covered in his courses i taken in Toni Areal by @zhdk_transdisciplinary

Die Ausstellung «Atlas der Reproduktion – Babys, Grenzen, Geopolitik» kartiert die Verbindungslinien zwischen Geopolitik und den Entscheidungen, die in Schlafzimmern, Gebärsälen und Kliniken getroffen werden. Künstlerische Arbeiten, die auf Forschungsprojekten basieren, thematisieren reproduktive Gerechtigkeit in der Schweiz und an unterschiedlichen Orten der Welt.

Die Filmemacherin Lisa Gerig und der Medienkünstler Joachim Clematide haben auf Basis der Forschungsarbeit eine Videoinstallation erarbeitet.
Die Videos zeigen die intime Atmosphäre schlafender Mütter und ihrer Babys in Schweizer Haushalten während des Wochenbetts. Dem gegenüber steht ein Audio, das aus verdichteten Erzählungen geflüchteter Mütter zusammengestellt wurde und von den Bedingungen in den Schweizer Bundesasylzentren berichtet.

The first time I @athene_galiciadis spoke with @megizumstein about the idea for this artist book was back in 2021.

Inspired by our previous collaboration on Spiraling Shifts at the Nidwaldner Museum, we spent the following years imagining and shaping this new project: Fruits n Loops.

Sometimes a project simply needs time to unfold. To grow from a planted seed into Fruits n Loops.

The publication is accompanied by a text by @the_chus_martinez.
