Before I go, I want to leave a statement in tandem with my recent performance in articule. It was initially titled How to Be Accepted Part 2, following the earlier work of the part 1 that I performed at MainLine Theatre in 2024. I later changed the title to Lupang Hinirang (ā€œChosen Landā€), the title of the Philippine national anthem, to reflect the ironic reality of belonging as a migrant and a full-blooded Filipino.

The moment I got organized with Anakbayan, I became more exposed to the lies and abuses of power committed by the Philippine government. From the year I immigrated until now, I have never seen my presence here in Canada as a lucky break. Forced migration is the result of the never-ending struggle of the Filipino people. Why did we leave the Philippines? To be reunited with my mother, who had been forced to migrate ten years earlier? To access an education that costs almost a lifetime of work? To have a roof over our heads in a cramped space while paying exorbitant rent?

I am one of the privileged: a self-taught, career artist living a petty-bourgeois lifestyle. To be here is to carry a long list of unfortunate experiences, to have a story that must be told, to endure pain again and again and again. But political art does not work without political action. The images presented here cannot exist only within the realm of art, nor can they remain confined to it (a space that is already saturated with artists, curators, and academics who reject militant propaganda.)

This performance, in which the body is confined within hybrid lands and can exist only through passports and visa stamps, remains bound and is still waiting to be liberated. No one is free until all of us are. From the heart of your living room to a global perspective: resist imperialism, resist fascism, and continue protesting in the streets.

i feel the same feeling
of a new immigrant, leaving her home, for a promised one
my tiny home, occupied by termites
colony of community, invasive and icky
I am a termite in this country, the leaders always try to kill us but our colony is strong
Wet concrete gets poured, we live.
But today in a blue moon, i grieve of my other home
the one where i was first promised,
of safety and comfort
I don’t need to live here in Montreal because I can live and die in the Philippines.
But thats just a fairytale for now.

I was once a motherless child, now always thinking (feel) about the grief of many mothers, away from the comfort of the familiar. I see her gazing out of the window of the bus that takes her everyday to work, thinking about everything that makes the sacrifice worthwhile.

i guess if youre still reading up to here, would love to hear how u cope with homesickness.. and looking for kind words right now :,) šŸ«‚ by @ziloj

Walking barefoot to touch polished pebbles the size of the cereal you’ve always wanted as a child
You want to see everything within grayscale, illuminated by the soft morning sun
Dust particles dance inside the invisible border of a sunbeam

I inhaled myself once there
Head gazed up, mouth half open
Cracking of the bamboos on my left ear
The other was echoes of yearning

My heart feels better. I can talk to myself again without uttering a word. I simply live without a hurry. Own my values. Practice without expectations. I eat wisdom with bare hands. I cry, without thinking it should be caused by pain and suffering. by @ziloj

tinawag din nila kaming negra

Performance at Le Lieu last October. A performance night showcasing the fruition of a residency in Norogachi, Mexico during the Raramuri’s holy week tradition.

This piece is still in reflection today. Its an introspection on what we can take as a witnesses and transform as descendants to a lineage, who we are as the future ancestors, any many more difficult intrusive thoughts (many of which formulated during the long bus rides in the desert..)

🐪

Thank you to the many brains that helped nourish and gave a critical eye on this piece. (u know who u are)

Faith and custom often stand as witnesses in these unions, sanctifying obedience over consent. What is called sacred becomes a chain — love rewritten as duty, purity, and fear.

-

Every year globally, 12 million girls are forced into marriage before turning eighteen, sealing their futures in ceremonies disguised as tradition. More than 650 million women alive today were once child brides, their girlhood exchanged for religion’s blessing or culture’s silence.

-

One in three women worldwide has known the fist or threat of an intimate partner: a statistic so familiar it almost stops sounding like tragedy. Violence in the home remains the quietest war, fought in kitchens and prayer rooms alike.

-

In Canada, police recorded over 128,000 cases of intimate partner violence. Nearly 80% of victims were women (statistics from 2024). Behind each report is a door closed too tightly, a neighbour pretending not to hear.

-

Almost four in ten women in Québec have endured psychological, physical, or sexual violence from a partner. The province’s silence hums beneath its progressive laws, proof that safety does not always follow policy.

-

About 18% of Filipino women aged 15–49 have suffered abuse at the hands of their husbands or partners. In a country where devotion and endurance are taught side by side, violence often hides behind prayers and wedding rings.
