“Dia[spora] / ΔΙΑ[ΣΠΟΡΑ]: A Garden in Dialogue / ΕΝΑΣ ΚΗΠΟΣ ΣΕ ΔΙΑΛΟΓΟ” showcases 19 international afrofeminist artists working in painting, photography, collage, and fiber whose work explores the multiplicity of black womanhood, self discovery and identity through the world building and womanist prose of Alice Walker, a Black feminist, poet, author and activist coined the term “womanist” in her book, “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens: Womanist Prose” (1983). Womanism, or Black feminism, offers a space for Black feminists who have been erased from our own labor. Now On Display at the Firehouse Gallery: “We” The People. An America 250 Exhibition, “We” The People, features a Timeline of Arrival for the various cultures that landed in Philadelphia and subsequently built the city and the country, contextualized through prints created at Brandywine. An interactive wall in the gallery, featuring a large map of the city, invites visitors to use yarn and pushpins to connect their country of origin to the part of Philadelphia that that they’ve contributed to, individually or through community.
