“Dia[spora] / ΔΙΑ[ΣΠΟΡΑ]: A Garden in Dialogue / ΕΝΑΣ ΚΗΠΟΣ ΣΕ ΔΙΑΛΟΓΟ” showcases 19 international afrofeminist artists working in painting, photography, collage, and fiber whose work explores the multiplicity of black womanhood, self discovery and identity through the world building and womanist prose of Alice Walker, a Black feminist, poet, author and activist coined the term “womanist” in her book, “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens: Womanist Prose” (1983). Womanism, or Black feminism, offers a space for Black feminists who have been erased from our own labor. Getting all of these amazing artists to Athens was a journey I would do a thousand times over 🥹 Thank you to each of you ladies! Lesson’s I learned from this experience of curating my own international show:1. Just do it — Don’t wait for people to tell you, you can. 2. Don’t be afraid to make space for the community you love — I love Black women artists and they deserve more than I can even provide.3. Had the pleasure of chatting on a panel hosted by @perridash with @jackhoward_gems @brandonbarrybrown for our @revoltartfair limited podcast From Art to Assets with @ally about value centeric collecting ✨💰🖼️ My Top 3 Takeaways:✨ Collect with care, it’s not just about owning a piece but stewarding it and a relationship with the artist. Support them by honoring the work.✨ Good art is subjective. Collect based on your own personal style, interest and story. Use discretion of course, but it’s YOUR collection so own it!✨ You don’t need to be wealthy to purchase art. Save your coin and make acquisitions that are accessible to you. Collect your friends work. Let’s just say this years Miami Art Basel was SPECIAL! Curating @revoltartfair with @missaimstar and the @revolt team was a game changer. Many of us in the industry questioned the health, necessity and purity of the Western fair circuit particularly the cliché of Miami Art Basel and it’s reputation for performative optics over intrinsic objectives. In a moment of cultural and economic uncertainty, nationally and globally, we responded with an intention to not only infuse the cultural economy with joy, resilience, value, swag, and a currency only WE can cash in on! We didn’t come to play fair, but turned the very site that has left many Black artists on the margins historically, into a playground, for us, b(uy) us! Dual Currency: Defiance by Design is an ode to the dynamism of Black visual vernacular; the language we don’t just talk, but walk, run, pivot, dance and live by. Featuring over 50 artist across the diaspora, this exhibition was undoubtedly the blackest show in Miami and that’s something I can stand on and ground into because when WE are uplifted everyone feels, benefits, and breaths easier. This show was a breath of fresh air, an exhale in the silence, and an inhale into the future of what this work can look like in its many multitudes. Thank you @missaimstar , for allowing me to witness the fortitude, passion, and genius of the most powerful force I’ve come to know as the Black woman curator. You have provided shade for many and your devotion and care for makers is seen and felt in every gallery, program, written text and spoken word.@andrewooleryart and team, your commitment and persistence to sustain an ecosystem that will support the livelihoods of Black artists allowed these rooms to transform from whitewalls to enclaves for discovery and for that I am grateful ✨ #revoltartfair #revolt #dualcurrency #blackart #miamiartbasel #curator #art #special by @zindzine
