It’s tempting to assume there’s not still art studios on hilltops with dried paint on all the door handles and 30 foot sculptures covered in spider webs guarding the front door. The good news is art is alive and well and @zioziegler is living proof. Frames from our latest with Almine Rech. taken in Aspen, Colorado by @zioziegler

Now available – Coinciding with 'The Tesseract' Zio Ziegler’s (@zioziegler) fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, Almine Rech Editions is pleased to announce the release of four limited-edition etchings by the artist.

Translating the artist’s fundamental distillation and reconstruction of forms onto paper, each piece is hand-printed in black ink from a hard-ground etched copper plate onto Arches mould-made paper.

This exclusive collaboration is now available on the Almine Rech Editions website.

Like Foucault’s pendulum, which moves in an ellipse as it oscillates between its outer limits, Zio Ziegler’s ‘The Tesseract’ swings the viewer in whirling, elliptical fashion from one aesthetic mode to another. From the thickly patterned world of his monumental and maximalist pictures, to the exploratory mark making of his skeletal monochrome canvases. And from the visceral and layered forms of his so-called “Essential Figures,” to his similarly totemic three-dimensional figures whose dynamism he has stilled in bronze. Four modes, four artistic voices, four variations on a theme, each one giving rise to— yet also putting a kind of gravitational pressure on—the next.
What holds the center in Ziegler’s vibrant pictorial system, however, is not a single point but a space laden with enduring possibility. It is a window through which we look out onto an unnamed future, from a present reality that is (as he declares) “far too dense for any single voice to hold.” In the dynamic, even combustible, interplay between these four opposing aesthetic structures, Ziegler seeks to spark a new way of thinking. Resisting the homogenizing consensus that AI systems seem hellbent on producing among their human users, Ziegler suggests that we need a diverse visual language for self-reflection, as we continue to reckon with new intelligences we have built but have yet to understand.

I started making these tightly patterned paintings nearly eighteen years ago in my studio in Providence, Rhode Island, when I would take the Peter Pan bus into New York just to see exhibitions. Getting to finally show them there with Almine Rech feels like the realization of a very old dream.

The paintings use pattern, psychedelic imagery, and foundational religious myths to make sense of a moment that feels increasingly difficult to understand - one which is caught somewhere between the old world and whatever comes next.

When I started thinking about the theme of expulsion, it was a few years ago. I kept reading books like The Fourth Turning and Dalio’s The Changing World Order, and saw that we were inevitably being ushered into a new age. Some of these changes might be cyclical, but there’s something about the collective loss of innocence that I found to be an interesting theme. That led me to Ovid, then the Bible, and eventually to obsessing over the paintings of Masaccio.

Above is what I call a synthetic figure - a distillation and compression of every form of expulsion, reduced into a pictograph that can travel without context as a language form.

The Tesseract: The Expulsion - contains four expressions built around this same idea of expulsion, this synthetic figure is one of them.

Opening soon in New York: The Tesseract - the expulsion from the garden.
Pictured above is one of the four voices I’ve included in my upcoming show. This series, titled Reality Engines after Donald Hoffman’s “A Case against reality” - include the bare essential amount of visual information for your brain to make a conclusion about what it is seeing. Often these pictures try to sit right under that visual threshold, hopefully making us question all of the assumptions and gap filling which we are constantly practicing.
Depicted here is a reduced form of the expulsion from the garden, two figures exiting the gate. The expulsion theme seems to be an effective allegory for today’s global transition, from a state of seaming disconnected innocence to a new world order.
