A colleague reached out to me that one of her best staff is divorcing and would be leaving Lagos to Ondo, and she’s thinking of renting for her, by deducting from her salary until she’s gain her feet or she will work for her on percentage ratio. Hmmm smart or tricky? Which lead me to ask,

What would you do?

Wow, I didn’t even realize I’ve been gone for so long! 😯 Honestly, I’ve been super busy helping women start their ready-to-wear businesses while I was away, But guess what? I’m back, and this time I’m here to stay — at least until the end of the year 😁 (and honestly, forever )!

Especially since this community was created to share resources for women in the ready-to-wear business and Made-in-Africa clothing.

Do you have a clear employment contract, is it clear enough to let the tailor/staff know the consequences if they breach the contract?

Does it state the minimum time they have to work with you? Does your employment contract have a way you’ll retrieve your money incase of theft, ruined outfit, breach of contract and other misconduct from the staff?

📌If you do nothing, your tailors will continue to come to work anytime they like.
📌Always call you for the tiniest decision to make for them
📌You will continue to have sleepless night because you’re not sure your tailor will show up
📌Your customers will complain about the fitting of their outfit, because they’re not made the same as what you posted.

BUT

📌If you buy the E-book and implement, you will have a firm structure before the end of the year
📌You will be able to take break off work without worrying because your tailors can work without you.
📌Your tailors will follow all your instructions and workshop policy.
📌You will hire the right tailors
📌You will learn to delegate and lots more

They say this, only to start showing you their true colour 3 weeks later, If we start to talk about Tailor wahala we will not leave this place, but sometimes the fault is from the employer.

The longest time a tailor has worked with me is 6 months, do I have bad character? I cannot tell, but one thing I’m sure was I didn’t know what I wanted when hiring. From the job description, the task to do, the policy and even my company’s SOP. But I’m grateful because the experience has helped me structure my business that it can run without me since I left Nigeria.
