Just finished working on an absolutely EPIC commission that I can’t wait to share with you but I can’t until it’s been delivered. Until then, I kept a record of all the colours I used. Have become dangerously addicted to using @winsorandnewton cobalt blue during this process which has probably contributed to 50% of the material costs all on its own, but it was definitely worth it!

This is the point in a painting where I used to think hurrah! Nearly finished! But now I know better. There’s almost 100 more colours to go!

One part of the way I paint that continues to surprise me is that I never know where a new colour will go until after I’ve mixed it. Which means that I will often make up a good amount of a colour I love, only to find it wants to go on the smallest shape in the painting.

I’ve long stopped questioning this process: there’s a deeper knowing that guides this and it’s never wrong (meaning that sometimes I don’t quite tune in correctly but not often!).

Discovering this process has been one of the most satisfying and fulfilling parts of my practice and I’m always grateful that it’s available to me whenever I’m there to listen.

One more session and all done! Then I’ve just got to work out how to turn it into a repeat 😄

Just came across this one…it’s unfinished and slightly snail-amended (!) but I quite like the colours against the black. Definitely one for future consideration!

First larger scale repeat pattern ready for painting. First gouache I’ve painted in a while which feels exciting. Pattern based on sketches made from a felled willow tree in Henry Moore gardens that was originally planted by his brilliant wife, Irina Radetsky, so it’s got a good artistic history!

I’ve chosen the basic colour palette but, as always, what comes out in the course of a painting is always a surprise to me. Another adventure!
