In this common scenario that can happen to any 12-year-old girl, she begins to notice red flags: too much attention from an older guy, inappropriate compliments, and behavior that makes her uncomfortable. Because of a prior conversation with her mom, she knows what to do. She texts their code word—and is safely picked up within minutes.

At ZOE International, we believe prevention starts with everyday conversations that build trust, teach boundaries, and empower kids to speak up.

Online safety is a serious issue today. It is important to remain aware of who you are connecting with online and to recognize the warning signs of unsafe interactions. Harmful situations have already occurred, and in some cases, online connections with dangerous individuals have led to kidnapping and human trafficking.

CONTENT WARNING: This post discusses child s*xual abuse.

Nearly half a million children are forced to produce se*ual content for profit, mostly for Western men.

The Philippines is the epicenter of the industry for child s*xual abuse material (CSAM). From 2015 to 2023, the US was the number one buyer of CSAM from the Philippines.

From 2020 to 2022, Americans spent more than $7 million on illegal child ab*se content from the Philippines.

While Western men may be watching the child ab*se online, female family members are offering up the victims. Of the 50 women who were arrested last year for s*xually abusing and exploiting children online, 32 were mothers.

In this episode of #LawAndOrder #SVU titled “Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing,” a desperate mother and her son are helped to go from a shelter to subsidized housing, only to find herself coerced into s*x trafficking as she is threatened with eviction.

On appearances, it may seem someone is consenting to trade s*x for housing, money, or drugs, but taking the time to learn their story and needs often exposes force, fraud, or coercion entrapping a vulnerable person.

On September 30, 2026, Governor Newsom signed a package of California laws aimed at better protecting trafficking and s*xual assault survivors and making college campuses safer:

AB 1656: Allows cases involving human trafficking, child s*xual exploitation, and extortion to qualify as “good cause” for granting a continuance in a criminal case.

AB 1845: Strengthens protections on college campuses by requiring postsecondary institutions to adopt policies and training addressing human trafficking and improve procedures for identifying and reporting s*xual crimes.

AB 1918: Prohibits a body art practitioner or owner of a body art facility from publicly disclosing personal identifying information about a client suspected to be a victim of human trafficking, and requires facilities to be trained in human trafficking awareness.

AB 2274: Prohibits the granting of immunity to anyone other than the defendant in a human trafficking case involving a minor unless the person is named in a written agreement that is approved by a court.

SB 1056: Establishes new privacy protections for adult victims who are the subject of s*xually explicit images or recordings introduced as evidence in specified criminal cases.

On September 30, 2026, Governor Newsom signed California Assembly Bill 1267 into law prohibiting child marriage.

Current law allowed exemptions for minors under 18 who obtain parental permission and a court order.

AB 1267 bans marriages outright for people under 18, joining 17 other states that outlaw the practice. by @zoe_int

The film Primetime starring Robert Pattinson is based on journalist Chris Hansen’s To Catch a Predator series from the early 2000s where decoys would pretend to be children, as adults would attempt to meet them to ab*se them.

Sadly today, not much has changed, adults meet children online offering them drugs, romance, friendship, in order to lure them out of their homes to ab*se them.

At ZOE International’s Protecting Kids Online events, you can see what happened when an undercover detective posted during our event about being a child and how quickly adults attempted to meet him.

ZOE works to protect children through our prevention programs all around the world and online so no more children will be harmed. One is too many!
