A million thanks to the Fulbright Foundation in Greece @the_fulbright_program and to Prof. @jill_s_miller -looking so much forward working in her studio @ucberkeley_artpractice

And of course everyone who supported me: @deree_acg colleagues especially Jennifer Nelson and Dean Helena Maragou. Many thanks also to @aristide_antonas and @nefelimiro and to my dearest friend Christina Syrengela ❤️

Can’t wait to get there! ✌️🏄🏻‍♀️ by @zoehatzi

Thank you all for coming in da woods and sharing your photos!

“The woods are lovely, dark and deep” (2025) explores the interstitial space between reality and digitality, reflecting upon the rapid evolution of technology and its intersection with the natural environment. The installation resonates with themes of alienation and surveillance, drawing connections to the concept of self-hyperawareness in a world where each interaction feels mediated through a screen and the companies that sell them. In this unsettling, fragmented world, the work questions whether we can still genuinely experience nature or if it has merely become a backdrop for another performance for the lens.

Áttað / Navigating
HEAD2HEAD

Nú fer hver að verða síðastur að sjá sýninguna Áttað í Nýlistasafninu sem stendur opin til og með sunnudagsins 24. nóvember. Sýningin samanstendur af verkum Despina Charitonidi, Jo Pawlowska í samstarfi við Sasa Lubinska, Kosmas Nikolaou og Zoe Hatziyannaki er sýningarstýrt af Eleni Tsopotou / Stoa 42. Áttað skoðar hvernig manneskjur eiga samskipti og kanna – eða tekst ekki að kanna – tengsl innra með okkur sjálfum, líkömum okkar, við mannlegar og ómannlegar verur. Þvert á áþreyfanlega og stafræna heima, fjölbreytta landafræði og landamæri. Þessar hugmyndir bregðast við og eru skilgreindar á tímum umhverfisvárinnar þar sem að maðurinn er orðinn jarðfræðilegt hreyfiafl sem hefur áhrif á ferli jarðar, tímum loftslagsbreytinga og glundroða, síðkapítalisma, átaka, heimsfaraldra, mikillar þéttbýlismyndunar og offerðamennsku.

/Last chance to see the exhibition Navigating at the Living Art Museum is Sunday 24th of November. The museum is open every day until then from 12-18. Navigating examines the ways humans communicate and explore—or fail to explore—connections within ourselves, our bodies, with human and non-human entities across physical and digital worlds, diverse geographies, and national boundaries. These ideas respond to and are defined by this critical moment of ecological crisis, in which humans have become geological agents, altering the earth’s physical processes, a time of climate change and chaos, late capitalism, conflicts, global pandemics, and extreme urbanization and overtourism. by @zoehatzi

Very excited to have Episode 3 of The Day the Earth Caught Data on view until 24th November in The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik @nylistasafnid part of Head2Head group exhibition Navigating @h2h_reykjavik co-curated by Eleni Tsopotou @stoa42

The Day the Earth Caught Data unfolds in a series of different episodes attempting to draw parallels between a widely shared, seemingly uncomplicated reality and a troublesome fiction where the image-makers become storytellers of their own unsettling future. Each episode suggests a dystopian scenario, the aftermath of intense human presence and the constant use of digital media that accompanies it, wondering if the end of the world will come from our own visual representations. Episode 3, presented at the exhibition, develops as a partly interactive installation using online material sourced from Google Earth and screenshots from Google’s 360-view panoramas Photo Sphere. The focus is on Jökulsárlón, the famous glacial lake in the southern part of Iceland, which is undergoing unprecedented changes due to global warming.

“The Day the Earth Caught Data” is an on-going research project reflecting on the complications of tourism and its contribution to climate change, considering not only its physical notorious footprint, but also its digital one. Its title refers to the post-apocalyptic movie “The Day the Earth Caught Fire” (dir. Val Guest, 1961) and develops around a fictional, end-of the-world scenario, using online material shared by different users through Google Earth.
Constant surveillance practices on the Earth’s surface, the frequent use of mapping apps, as well as the incessant online sharing of self-referential content, all complement tourism’s already significant part in global warming. The research is focused on Santorini Island, one of the most popular destinations in the world, which has ended up facing serious environmental and sustainability problems. Its volcano, a separate piece of land surrounded by sea, receives a considerable portion of the island’s visitors on day tours. The project uses the satellite images generated by Google Earth, along with the artist’s photos, in order to construct a dystopian narrative. The volcanic landscape resembles that of another planet, or that of a doomsday film setting, where disoriented individuals walk around the barren, uninviting surroundings.
“The Day the Earth Caught Data” is developed in a series of different ‘episodes’ attempting to draw parallels between a widely shared, seemingly uncomplicated reality and a troublesome fiction of an unsettling future.
Episode 2 which is presented in Kastelana Photography Centre is an interactive installation where the audience is encouraged to participate by taking their own photos in the simulated environment of the backdrop print and share them online. by @zoehatzi
