I don’t know how to write about this yet. It all happened too quickly to process, only 115 days from an abdomen pain to cremation. That is not befitting of the life my father lived, or the love he imbued in every single action he made upon this earth. He was a brilliant, fascinating and endlessly fascinated person: at various points in his life he was a fine art painter, a dive master, a licensed acupuncturist, and a judo champion in both the Bahamas and Quebec. He surfed and skated in his youth and became an avid kiteboarder as my brother was going pro, pulling him out of school on good days to chase the wind together. He practiced meditation in ashrams in India and New York, and was a follower of Kashmir Shavism, as well as a curious student of Buddhist and Taoist thought. He painted us flowers in watercolor and collected books on Monet. Above all he was observant and kind in a world that is not accommodating to kindness. Kindness as strength, as a masculinity, as a love, as a thoughtfulness.

My mother was just as kind, just as thoughtful, just as strong in her love. A lifelong child educator who cofounded a preschool when a friend and fellow teacher realized there was no place for her son, or for other children with developmental disabilities. An early organizer of the Naples Children’s Museum, she taught classes and nannied children until her body couldn’t handle it anymore. A traveler and photographer of nature, a reader fascinated with the history of fashion, and a truly funny person who took me to see George Carlin as a teenager, and let me stay up with her to watch movies when our mutual insomnia pulled us like moths to the living room television.

They left 3 years apart. Ages 63 and 61. I am only 37. My daughter is not yet 2. That she will never truly know a world with them in it is so brutal and so goddamn deeply unfair. Her grandparents: loving, thoughtful, kind. All the things she deserves to know, to have, to be held by. I can’t believe this is real

Gordon Vincent & Cynthia Austin Bowe. They should be coming up on their 40th wedding anniversary next year. I’m so sorry to everyone who never got to know them. I miss you both so much. by @zooghostly

Many of you know and love Zoo; our in house somm, best bud and walking encyclopedia. The one that can’t help but put a smile on your face. He’s taking an extended leave from behind the 86 bar to be by his father’s side.
While being with family is exactly where he needs to be during this time, it also means a loss of income for him.

Some of you have asked how you can help, so we’re leaving his Venmo link in our bio as well as a donation jar at the shop.
If you’re in a position to contribute, every donation will go directly toward helping him cover living expenses and putting food on the table for his beautiful wife and daughter while he focuses on his family. If donating isn’t possible, simply keeping him and his family in your thoughts means just as much.

Thank you for always showing what an incredible community 86 Wine Bar has. We love you all and we love you Zooey! by @zooghostly

My grandmother, Raquel Kramer Austin, best known simply as ROCKY, was a force of nature. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, she eventually moved to The States, married, and raised a daughter, my late mother (miss you, mom🖤). In 1981 she moved alone, and with the help of a few she built an ashram in Negril, Jamaica. The Negril Yoga Centre was her home for the next couple decades as she continued wandering the world (she was particularly fond of Bali in the 80s, before it was easy to be a tourist trampling thru). In Jamaica she led her yoga & meditation study, hosted spiritual seekers from around the world, and grew into her own planted plot of life. I remember the passports stacked and filled with stamps. I remember the hat boxes full of cassettes of rocksteady, roots, and dub she recorded off the Sound System—the illegal stations and DJs broadcasting across the island. I remember the smell of incense and textiles collected, and the way she watched us from the kitchen after cooking, a trait I’ve inherited. I remember her telling me to lift my sternum, quite literally, but maybe as a metaphor as well: to lift my chest and look forward. To breathe, to be centered, to be home in my body

She also taught me strength. Rocky was a fearless and direct person. She was the child (and mother and, for a bit, the wife) of survivors and this survivalist energy informed her every gesture. We butted heads at times— Rocky clashing with others was a lifetime refrain. To a fault, she was maybe the most human person I’ll ever know; I mean that in the entire spectrum of humanity, from the hurt, the cruel, the sad, to the gracious, the brave, the sheltering, loving, everything. And it takes a certain strength to hold all the rivers of the world in your veins at once. Maybe I’ve learned to be as strong as her. Maybe I’m unlearning. But her great-granddaughter already has her tenacity, her fearlessness, her unfiltered expression of being alive. Perhaps that’s all we can hope for: to absorb and expel the entire universe with our every breath, so that even now, as her atoms disperse and rejoin the world, she is still, in her tangled way, more alive than any of us can ever dream of being taken in Negril Yoga Centre Jamaica by @zooghostly

First week of service for 2026 in the books. Y’all really showed out, kept us on our toes, 86ed menu items, pushed the space to the limit. We did the dance, and how beautifully we dance together. We are grateful to see you happy, loved, cared for and fed. Let’s dance together again in a few days. So it goes. taken in 86 Wine Bar by @zooghostly

We are beyond grateful to spend these evenings together, talking grapes in a bottle, talking life, as it reminds us of what makes life worth living; community is everything. A sincere connection is worth more than a brick of gold. Probably more than two. “I break bread and pour the wine like Jesus.” - Sonnyjim

🎨ARTIST APPRECIATION 👨🏻‍🎨

over the 5(!) years we’ve been hosting pop-ups we’ve had a world of great chefs, visual artists, photographers, DJs, screen printers and semi-professional drinkers collaborate with us on throwing a monthly (and eventually a thrice-monthly) party celebrating the best our community had to offer. one of the most important of those collaborators is Joe Frontel (@notjoefrontel), a wildly prolific artist, a beloved friend of the cellar, and a truly beautiful motherfucker, if we may say so ourselves. starting last year Joe took over monthly visuals (and joined forces with @abstractpoet to paint the mural outside) and now we get to look back at the series that’s emerged, all done in various styles to fit each chef’s aesthetic, but all definitively in Joe’s voice

Support your local artists, and be kind to the charming alcoholics who pour your drinks every night. we’re all just trying to make this place just a little bit more bearable, a little bit more beautiful taken in CellarMasters Wine Bar & Bottle Shop by @zooghostly
