I’m generally not a very public person. I don’t post about much of anything other than my kids now and then. Mostly because I struggle with what I perceive to be “look at me” social media.
But George Floyd dying, handcuffed with a police officer’s knee on his neck, has weighed so heavily on my heart that I feel compelled to write.

Some 25 years ago, Steve Holman said something to me that opened my eyes. We were roommates at a race in LA and shared a rental car for the week. When you pulled out of the hotel parking garage the attendant had to raise the gate. When I drove I’d just flash the room key and the gate would open. When Steve drove he received the 3rd degree. What’s your name? What’s your room #? I was livid and frustrated. After many long conversations about his experiences growing up Black in Minneapolis he said “As a white man you’ll never truly understand what its like to be a black man in America but the fact that you’re trying means a lot.” A light bulb went off. Even though “I’m not racist” I’m part of the problem.

Since that moment I’ve been imperfect. I often allow racist jokes or comments to go unchallenged. I’ve too often ignored the reality of white privilege. I’ve mostly remained silent. I’m still part of the problem.

I believe that all change starts when individuals are willing to take a hard and honest look in the mirror. If we’re truly honest with ourselves we’ll see things that make us proud and we’ll see things that are disappointing, painful and embarrassing. Trust me when I tell you that seeing these bad and ugly things about ourself is ok. They don’t make us bad people. They just make us human.

I’m asking all my white friends to look in the mirror with me. It’s time to be part of the solution. It’s time to speak up when we hear a racist joke at work. It’s time to have honest conversations with our kids. It’s time to acknowledge white privilege and the head start we’ve received in life. That doesn’t mean we have to move or change the school our kids go to it just means that we have to acknowledge the truth of it because that’s where change begins. I for one will not be silent any longer. by @zoomkennedy

So many people we passed on the trail today asked if I was from Boston and I was thinking “what the hell? Why is everyone asking that?” Then @cbadams22 pointed out I was wearing an @bostonmarathon shirt 🤦🏻‍♂️. taken in Mccullough Gulch Trail by @zoomkennedy
