What does it mean to be Black in Montgomery County? At the State of Mid-County Communities Summit, we made space for experiences that countywide averages can hide. Listen to what our neighbors shared.

What began as one concerned resident’s objection to gun-shaped cigarette lighters being sold in a neighborhood convenience store has become another example of the power of grassroots organizing, community advocacy, and citizen participation in local government.

On September 23, 2026, the Dayton City Commission passed the Novelty Gun Lighter Prohibition Act, legislation prohibiting the retail sale and public display of novelty lighters designed to resemble actual firearms. The ordinance, scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027, represents a significant victory for community members who raised concerns about the potential dangers these products pose, particularly to children and young people. Thank you @iamtiffanykelly for hosting this important summit that brought attention to the PEOPLE who've been left behind and marginalized at your inaugural mid-county summit (Mid-County Democratic Breakfast club)in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

It was my honor to participate on the panel that centered the Black experience in this part of "progressive, liberal" Montgomery County, Maryland.

I am glad to learn that my comments and @westbaltimorelove remarks had people "clutching their pearls." 💪🏾🤣

GOOD! People are DONE with business as usual. Gaslighting and playing in our faces while they continue to cater to the billionaire class in the region.

It's predictable that the city of Gaithersburg elected leadership got up and left right in the middle of the program. Right before our panel that centered Black people's experience in @midcountymoco. The hate is REAL in how they govern.
