Hi! I’m still alive, although not much to show in terms of art - however, if interested in taking a peek, i’ll be taking part in the open studios weekend @waspsdundee on 26-27 September. i’ll have lots of work in progress pieces and very discounted ceramics from my side hustle @m_elankolia so come say hi! :-) by @zsofia.joachim

Ok but exactly 10 years ago I was posing with my self-portrait; i was finishing uni and I didn’t know i was going to move to scotland soon (fun fact i applied to do a BA in Leeds but withdrew cause we couldn’t afford the tuition fees for 3 years, that’s how i ended up doing a one year masters instead!)
Fucking hell, 10 years! Aging is weird because going from 2006 to 2016 i remember less than going from 2016 to 2026 and yet there is still such a chasm between this photo and today. Idk what this is, an ode to the passing of time and changing and admitting how fucking scary it all is but also amazing because i know so much more today than i knew ten years ago. I just wish i had the same optimism & “joie de vivre” that comes from a certain naïveté of shelter…(I’m autistic and always years behind so at 21 i was still very much a child in fact i still am to a degree… just a bit more resilience & cynicism that comes with experience.)

Anyway, enjoy a tiny bit of art from ten years ago. Maybe I will make something new in the next ten! 🤞

Coincidentally, reading the studio chapter in Poor Artists whilst on commute from the office to my flat which takes a ridiculous amount of time especially for a city like Dundee; reflecting on my relationship to my studio. The first time i had a (shared) studio was when I arrived at DJCAD in September 2016, and it was The Best Thing Ever! (Before that I pained out of my tiny bedroom in my parents’ flat, if you are determined enough you can scroll back on my feed for some snippets!)
After the MFA i very quickly found myself working out of my rented flats once again - in the livingroom/kitchen, then moved into another flat where i had a whole living room to call a studio (i covered the carpet in plastic wrap so i could do mental stuff like spray painting and pouring resin whilst making sure I’d keep my security deposit) then back in the kitchen in yet another flat - i was plaster casting and recycling clay next to my brother who cooked. Health and safety and all that.
The next “proper” thing was my wee space in WASPS -courtesy of DCW - it was actually affordable, living off of two part-time jobs.

Cue lots of Bad Things (life) and the need to make more money (my kitten was ill; cost of living crisis, etc etc) so i ditched the part time jobs and decided to learn a Trade™️, something that sounded fun(and somewhat artistic?) and would eventually lead to more earnings. Well, long story short, that was a
Massive flop and we don’t talk about it, but it provided me with my first real studio, the one i still have. (At that time it was only feasable for me to rent an actual separate studio from WASPS because I had a studio mate to share rent with, as rent hikes followed us very quickly.)

As of summer, i have the space for myself. Not gonna lie, currently I’m paying a little less than my share of the rent for my home per month to keep the space, “the room of my own”. I don’t have to go on more about the necessity of having a space as an artist, read the @thewhitepube & woolf.

Long time no see - it’s been a really difficult year, not a lot of art or research or anything. My kitten’s illness and the surrounding difficulties have taken its toll on me mentally. Things are changing for the better and i’m slowly and tentatively crawling out of this state and trying to make again.

So! I’ve decided to share my newest venture into clay creations called @m_elankolia where i’ll be sharing my ‘functional’ creations. And, I’ll be taking part in the @dcadundee crafted market next weekend! 👁️

Hopefully next year there will be more to share here too, I have some unfinished business / work to make for a very very postponed exhibition too 💫

To brighter days ahead! ✨ by @zsofia.joachim

Prim t-shirt are available to buy through @everpresshq ! everpress.com/saving-prim

I did this drawing to try raise funds for my cat’s lifesaving medication.

Prim was diagnosed at the end of May with a life threatening illness called FIP. The vet gave up on her but thankfully we heard of the ‘FIP warriors’, a group of amazing people who can not only source the medicine but support and advise through the minimum 84-day treatment.

Thanks so them, we are saving the sweetest kitten’s life! Her bloodwork has improved significantly since the start of treatment, her appetite and mood is back to normal - it’s incredible to see her so well after months of slowly fading away.

However, the medication is very expensive and requires a higher dosage as she grows - the estimate of her total treatment is around £1,800-£2,000 which is - a Lot. We also have a gofundme page, link in bio.

Every share and donation helps us tremendously, so thank you ever so much for all past and future contributions! ❤️

And most importantly: if you know of a cat who has FIP, get in touch!! It’s no longer a death sentence!

My tiny kitten has an aggressive, life-threatening illness. If anyone can help contribute to the cost of her medicine, or share the fundraiser, I'd be eternally grateful!

Microscope test tiles 🦠🔬

i’m very inconsistently making still! I don’t think i realized how difficult it’ll be to get back to a sense of ‘normal’ whilst things are still so weird and upside down.. Anyway! I’m very inconsistent and burnt out, yet still feeling the pressure to show what I do. Does this makes sense? 🤔 taken in Dundee Ceramics Workshop by @zsofia.joachim

***IN TOUCH***

Back in the summer I had the fantastic opportunity to work with @embassygallery on producing a 50 edition tactile experience that were sent across the UK. I made 50 individual ‘hands’ with kombucha SCOBY leather, to imitate human touch.
Thank you ever so much to the EMBASSY committee and to @studiororo for the incredible documentation!

✺SWAMP ISLAND LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM✺

while some dream of touch, conversations, spirits and music, drawn to living in a community that is still an idealised memory, others learn to adapt to the rhythm of nature by discovering a new ability of being in their own company and listening to their bodies. in both of these attitudes there is a longing, a primal desire to unite and find oneself as part of a larger, metaphysical organism. the lack of physicality results in a feeling of loss and bizarre loneliness, so we compensate for it with cold air, the smell of fog and rot, the taste of rain. wanting to multiply the sensory experiences of our bodies thriving for connection, we run away to nature, paradoxically looking for other people in it. this relationship between isolation, nature and the desire for connection is the focus of the exhibition. over several months of incubation, the objects evolved, ideas transformed appearing and dying like organic beings, to finally emerge from the swamp as day bleeds into night, casting shadows of dismay and awe into the periphery of all watchers. by opening a small portal to this alternative world in which pandemic's desires, fears and hopes materialise among water, plants and mud, we create a place of union between human and human, human and nature, and - finally - the entire ecosystem - both physical and spiritual.
the swamp island presents itself as a speculative, temporary living history museum that exists in an alternative time and space. a site for collective hope, dreaming and imagining. artworks become artefacts that thrive in darkness. artefacts become tokens of resilience, or spirits to ward off harm and co-exist within these times of uncertainty.
the word ‘miasma’ is excavated from a defunct theory, where it was believed that epidemics were caused by rotting organic matter, or ‘night air’, encouraging the masses to stay inside and away from the natural world. taken in 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 by @zsofia.joachim
