Did you know August is National Make-A-Will month? A perfect time to consider how your legacy can make a lasting impact while supporting the arts in a meaningful way.

We’d like to tell you about our dear friend Connie Bernstein and how her legacy launched our newest program for youth and their families: Word for WordPLAY.

When you name Z Space as a beneficiary in your will or trust, you ensure our programming is around for years to come.

Z Space’s intrepid production team got trapped in our freight elevator this week during load in for our co-production of Pilgrimage with @goldenthreadplays. While everyone eventually got out alive, our team took the opportunity to hold our calendar meeting, and also highlight the upcoming feasibility study Z Space is conducting for future improvements to our building.

You can have a say in what changes are made to this historic building by filling out our community survey! We would love to hear your feedback on your experience of Z Space, including the Steindler Stage, Z Below, and all of the supporting aspects of these locations. It is our intent to begin to prepare Z Space for the future, keeping it vibrant, flexible, welcoming, and ready for new generations of creative possibilities.

Is it possible to find real love in a place where you don’t belong?

In Tatyana Tolstaya’s “Smoke and Shadows,” a Russian professor living in the U.S. navigates her professional life, her intimate relationships, and the mysteries of culture. Told with Tolstaya’s sharp, restrained wit, the story zeros in on the experience of living in a new culture and the confusions and imbalance that can cause.

This fall, Word for Word brings two short stories to the stage in Assimilation: Stories by E.L. Doctorow & Tatyana Tolstaya. Two protagonists, two unsettled lives, and one question underneath both: when everything around you asks you to change, do you?

Oakland Theater Project and New Performance Traditions present
Shakespeare’s King Lear running September 26 – October 11 on Z Space’s Steindler Stage!

In the twilight of his rule, a king sets out to divide the kingdom among his three daughters. But in mistaking flattery for love, Lear’s foolish choices usher in a new reign of domination, cruelty and collapse.

As a self-styled “bastard” sets out to upend the ruling order, Lear must confront his own part in the kingdom’s downfall.

Can he transform in time to reclaim what is sacred before the clown show becomes the new order?

Show must close October 11! Get tickets via the link in our bio! by @zspacesf
