Pioneer Square’s First Thursdays aren’t exactly a hidden gem: The art walks have established themselves as a go-to, cross-cultural gathering site, drawing tens of thousands of participants into a vibrant civic ritual that’s equal parts fashion show, street party, night market, and art exhibit.

But how did the buzzy event come to be? And, more specifically, how did it manage to get its start and take off in Seattle, a city sometimes struggling to shake off sleepy and “freeze”-y stereotypes?

In a thoroughly reported piece for CHUM News, journalist Jonathan Zwickel (@zwickelicious) dove into the history of First Thursdays: a vivid, character-laden chronology that can’t be separated from Pioneer Square’s eventful past. He interviewed major gallerists, artists, real-estate moguls, and others to get the backstory, and map out what might come next.

Edison made his final departure on the morning of Friday, Oct. 17. The vet who helped him along said his body was shutting down as it lost ground to two kinds of cancer.

Since then all my words have felt too trite, too incomplete and totally unworthy of sharing publicly. Words like “love” and “death”—they are just too small to describe the grandeur of his presence or the void left by his passing.

All his life Edison was the picture of health—literally, according to the billboard we were on—but this year dealt him unexpected health concerns. In January, around the his 13th birthday, he alarmingly shed his entire undercoat, which he’d never done before. Two months later he was stricken with a skin infection. Both afflictions might’ve been his body fighting early-stage cancer.

His first diagnosis came in June, and we started chemo right away. Meanwhile he somehow contracted a second form of cancer, which was diagnosed in early October. I got the news on my 50th birthday.

Despite the rough going, Edison showed up day after day bearing his usual effortless dignity, agreeableness and forbearance. He still looked dashing and happy. Even in his diminished state he instilled joy and optimism wherever he went.

We took our last walk the day before he died. It was a brisk fall afternoon in Volunteer Park, and we watched the sunset together from Black Hole Sun, like so many times before. As we sat there a random dad was taken by Edison’s mellow demeanor. He became emotional when I told him about Edison’s condition, then offered to take our photo. He recited the AA Milne quote: “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Edison lit up the world until the very end. For me, for total strangers, for everyone who knew and loved him. This new reality is beyond hard. Without him nothing is the same. by @zwickelicious

The poetry of sunsets is almost too much right now. Too beautiful, too brief.

Edison, my boy. He’s handsome as ever, still smiling, still charming. But he’s slowing down. Reminding me to slow down too.

Let the Kids Dance! LIVE is out: our bonus episode featuring an IRL conversation between Ben Gibbard, Lori LeFavor and me, seen here gesticulating awkwardly as usual lol.

The occasion brought SO MANY characters from the podcast together in the same room for the first time. That night the story of LTKD! came to life for a few hours, a packed house of young and old rallying around the power of all-ages music and art 💪

Big thanks to Ben and Lori, who shared some truly hilarious/beautiful stories. Thx to Easy Street Records for giving us a colorful stage. Thx to the Vera Project for on-site screenprinting rad tees and totes. Thx to Kim and Ryan for providing a kickass soundtrack. And thx to KUOW for producing the live episode.

Stream at the link in my bio! (And sound on for the last slide video courtesy Hans Twite feat. the most famous "f*ck you" in Bumbershoot history.)

You wouldn’t know by looking at him, but Edison has cancer. He was diagnosed at the end of June, while we were in Eastern Oregon on our first big van trip. I thought it was just sore joints; turned out he needed to have an anal sac surgically removed. He’s now on chemo to treat the cancerous lymph node that remains—and likely will be for the rest of his life.

Edison is almost 14 years old, and knowing his epic hiking and climbing days are behind him, I bought Bow Jackson, my 1984 VW Westfalia, back in May. I figured we could still adventure across the PNW only now more comfortably and with less physical effort on his part. He clearly loves the van, which is even more fortuitous for us both given his illness. We’ll spend the rest of the summer vanlifing and remote working as much as possible, and likely further into the future as well.

I’m grateful to keep living a spectacular outdoor life with my best friend. Come find us at the campsite! We’d love to see you ❤️

Shout out to SPIN and the Seattle Times for covering Let the Kids Dance! I particularly love this line from Gemma Wilson: “Let the Kids Dance! is a great example of a story finding its medium; the audio ephemera is incredible, as, of course, is the music.” 🙏🙏

Come see the magic happen in person at our live episode recording tonite! ✨🎙️

🆕 Let the Kids Dance! Part 3: “The Best Pack of Idiots” 🤘🤘🤘 In 1991, Seattle’s underground music community ignited a pop-culture revolution—despite a crusading city attorney hell-bent on squashing it. Yes, at the height of the grunge boom, Seattle CRIMINALIZED the very thing making it famous. The Teen Dance Ordinance and other authoritarian “civility laws” drove the all-ages scene to the suburbs, which is why the next wave of Seattle music was born OUTSIDE Seattle.

City Attorney Mark Sidran set the official anti-youth, anti-poor, anti-artist tone of the entire 90s. His stance is echoed in Seattle’s current city attorney, city council and mayor, as well as in other cities experiencing conservative backlash today. None of this went down well in history. If you wanna know how people felt about Sidran back then, just listen to this guy’s 1999 rant to Seattle city council. And tune into Part 3 of Let the Kids Dance! Link in bio 💃🕺

“Hundreds of angry teenagers took out their frustration on police…”

In 1985, Gorilla Gardens was the all-ages concert venue where punk and metal first alloyed into the sound known as grunge. It was also the site of the first enforcement of the Teen Dance Ordinance, when cops shut down a Circle Jerks show and triggered a riot in the snowy streets of Seattle. The news footage of that night is absolutely priceless.

Hear from Keith Morris of the @circlejerksband and the teenage bouncer who was there—and sit in on the Congressional hearings on heavy metal that same year—in Part 2 of Let the Kids Dance!, “Kill Lou Guzzo.” Available now at linkin bio and wherever you get your podcasts 💃🕺
