Had the honor of designing @naacp’s 111th Spingarn Award Freedom Fund Gala program, honoring this year’s recipient, @rev.dramoscbrown. Brown is a civil rights leader, Freedom Rider, LGBTQ-rights advocate, and so much more—do yourself a favor and look him up. I was asked to take the print program in a more editorial direction, and with that, I went full steam ahead. Thank you to @pinchdesignco for the identity that she created for this year’s convention, which I was able to incorporate into the gala program, and for letting me do my thing. by @3_ring_studio

“You want my number? Which number do you want, George?” Name that film! Numbers for this mural are mostly approximations:

3 weeks to prime and paint
15 colors (2 mixed by me)
I paint roller
6 brushes
2 projection nights
2 major thunderstorms
5 visits from family
1 tornado alarm
30-50 dance breaks and sing-a-longs
15-20 cold brews
Many conversations with community members

All-in-all, not so bad! Thank you to @charlescountyparksrec for the opportunity to paint not one, but TWO murals at one of my favorite local parks.

The only requirement I had was to include recreation in the design. Each mural has a pair of legs stretched across various park elements, seasons, and time of day. The legs represent different recreational activities (soccer, football, baseball, running/jogging) and mingle with other elements that are flying across the composition: beech leaves on the men’s restroom side, and automeris io (peacock) moth on the women’s side.

These might be my favorite murals to date!

Put some anti-graffiti coat on these bad boys and officially closed this project out today. It was very hot (in the hundreds) and I immediately had to change when I got home. 🥵 that being said, this pair of murals might be my favorite mural project to date. Each mural has a pair of legs, each leg representing a different type of recreation (baseball, football, soccer, running), and they are leaping/running across various elements found at Laurel Springs Regional Park. Thank you to @charlescountyparksrec for the amazing opportunity and to the various employees, residents and guests that filled me with joy as they noticed the new pop of color at their favorite park. My favorite comment came@from a lady who screamed with delight and shouted “THIS is what I want my taxes paying for!” She made my day and set the bar high when it comes to compliments.

2️⃣ more days of mural painting to go. Today I added second and third layers of color to two of the five panels and painted in the letterforms on the lower half of the composition. I intended to get a lot of clips but halfway through the day, I gave up. It’s too hard to shoot and paint in the heat. The paint dries on the bristles and clean up takes longer 🥵🥵🥵 I did meet a very enthusiastic guest who shouted “THIS is where I want my tax dollars going!”

One of two new murals in progress. A thunderstorm set me back a day due to my projector needing to be in the open air (as opposed to under the pavilion).

Been listening to a lot of Go-Go lately and it prompted me to create this fun image for no particular reason. The design is inspired by @globeatmica posters, who promoted some of Go-Go’s earliest concerts. It features a sardine as a nod to my favorite @therealjyb song, “Sardines.” I threw in a few notes about Go-Go in the subsequent slides. Do you have a favorite Go-Go track, band, artist, or memory? Sound off in the comments! by @3_ring_studio

Spring is here and I’m still celebrating. Here’s a flower arrangement I made for the Easter holiday, a few pics of me in my favorite @levis jeans, and a mini bouquet of flowers (ranunculus cortusifolius and viola odorata) fit for a squirrel. by @3_ring_studio

This is a faux editorial I shot, modeled and illustrated to celebrate the beginning of spring. For those that may not know, I’m venturing into modeling and have been spending the last year building a portfolio. I officially signed a contract a few weeks ago and will be represented by an agency I will announce once my profile has been updated on their page. This work will be in addition to my design and illustration work, and is just a new way for me to exercise my creativity. New art and design for La Plata High School’s Spring Choral Concert this Thursday (directed by my wife, @rosalie983; my son, @j_assman27 will be performing). This program cover was created by taking a photo of a peony from my yard, converting to halftone and loosely coloring it with flat color in @procreate. The handwriting is also my own, created in procreate using @truegrittexturesupply’s Rusty Nib digital brush set. by @3_ring_studio

This is a logo project I finished last year but never got to share. @plantsbymadmadina’s business really picked up thanks to internet sales and she wanted a vibrant, exciting logo to brand her green-thumb work.

With a funky name like Mad Madina, and the fact that this brand is tied to plants, flowers and soil, I immediately started thinking, organic, fun, and double Ms.

Slides 1-5 depict the final direction we went in. A double M positive space creates the leaves of a plant in the negative space, completing the primary logo mark. The word mark was created using a combination of the typefaces Tofino and BN Nautic Grotesk by @bmnicks. There are varying weights and widths that give the typography a mad, organic feel.
