📍 Cove Point Park
🌎 Lusby, MD, USA

Amazing court. Awesome area in general. It’s just a 2 minute drive from Cove Point to Calvert Cliffs State Park… and 3.8 miles to hike to the water and back, but it’s worth it!

The court design is based off the Calvert cliffs, and if you have time to check them out - you can find fossils and shark teeth which are millions of years old!

“You want my number? Which number do you want, George?” Name that film! Numbers for this mural are mostly approximations:

3 weeks to prime and paint
15 colors (2 mixed by me)
I paint roller
6 brushes
2 projection nights
2 major thunderstorms
5 visits from family
1 tornado alarm
30-50 dance breaks and sing-a-longs
15-20 cold brews
Many conversations with community members

All-in-all, not so bad! Thank you to @charlescountyparksrec for the opportunity to paint not one, but TWO murals at one of my favorite local parks.

The only requirement I had was to include recreation in the design. Each mural has a pair of legs stretched across various park elements, seasons, and time of day. The legs represent different recreational activities (soccer, football, baseball, running/jogging) and mingle with other elements that are flying across the composition: beech leaves on the men’s restroom side, and automeris io (peacock) moth on the women’s side.

These might be my favorite murals to date!

We reformatted this piece for 9:16 to show off one of our favorite explainer techniques.

For this @trustforpublicland explainer, we used cutout photography to keep the visual world connected to real people, real places, and real Community Schoolyard projects.

The schoolyard itself is fictional, but the ideas inside it are not. Gardens, shade, play areas, gathering spaces, and stormwater features all draw from techniques TPL has used across different communities.

Animation let us combine those ideas, move through space and time, and show a full transformation that would be difficult to capture in one place.
It feels imaginative without drifting away from reality.

2️⃣ more days of mural painting to go. Today I added second and third layers of color to two of the five panels and painted in the letterforms on the lower half of the composition. I intended to get a lot of clips but halfway through the day, I gave up. It’s too hard to shoot and paint in the heat. The paint dries on the bristles and clean up takes longer 🥵🥵🥵 I did meet a very enthusiastic guest who shouted “THIS is where I want my tax dollars going!”

Many of you only follow this account so I figured I’d reveal to those who don’t know me IRL or via my other pages, that I’m an artist. Here I am painting one of my murals in a retail space last year. If you couldn’t already tell, I love nature (flora, fauna, and the like). I’m also an art director, graphic designer, and illustrator. Wanna know more? Just ask :) wanna see more? Check out my creative account @3_ring_studio.

Oh, and my go-to mural shoe is @xeroshoes ;)

In taxing times, and after another long day, I found a little “piece” (peace) of happiness in this local work of #Art. Thank you to the artists/visionaries responsible. 🖼️🎨

Good ol’ #SoMD. Sometimes it’s the simple things.

SOMD Quilt Mural #1: Cove Point Park is complete!

It is nearly Thanksgiving and we are PUMPED that we were able to get at least one mural on the map before the end of the year! This mural is located at @calvertcountyparksandrec’s Cove Point Park in Lusby.

The final design features a mirrored-image depiction of the historic neighboring Calvert Cliffs. These majestic cliffs, rising 100 feet high and stretching 30 miles along the Chesapeake Bay coast of Calvert County, are famous for their Miocene-era fossil shells and shark teeth (some dating as far back as 18 million years), found by countless collectors on the beaches below.

The simple organic shapes contrast with the geometric court striping and are designed to add movement to the courts and complement the back and forth play between the players.

The following photos were taken by @3_ring_studio all throughout the mural installation which lasted about three weeks. Drone photos were taken by Ray Mahar. Calvert County consulted with @project_backboard on best practices before installation. The mural was designed by @3_ring_studio and installed by @midatlanticasphalt. Additional photos were taken during the grand opening, which doubled as a 3-on-3 tournament for local youth.

Look out for a limited edition sleeveless shirt commemorating the Cove Point court mural soon!
