Kathy Bussert-Webb, Artist-led Research — Learning Through Materials

Kathy Bussert-Webb's post-residency research article on the Studio H Canada website, Failing Upward: Eco-friendly Sculptural Materials Research offers a fascinating look inside an artist's material-research methodology: testing, documenting, adapting, searching across disciplines and continuing when an experiment doesn't work.

During the research, Kathy explored hempcrete, vegan leather, Roman cement, kombucha scoby, lime stucco and an organic sealer. Some experiments succeeded. Others didn't — and those failures became information that shaped the next question, material or approach.

Kathy shares her experiments, formulas, challenges, adaptations and discoveries openly, making the article both a record of her own research and a resource other artists can learn from. Kathy also offers a bibliography for further reading.

This isn't only a resource for sculptors. For artists working with materials in any medium, the article offers something particularly valuable: an example of how another artist thinks through making.

Read Failing Upward: Eco-friendly Sculptural Materials Research on the Studio H Canada website or through the link in our bio.

Congrats @elleglasseart for her edgy solo exhibition @base.camp.studios - going on now in Belltown, Seattle, Basecamp 2, 3rd Ave. Was mesmerized by the shadows and movement from the books screwed to the walls & the fans blowing on the open pages! #poetryinstallation #wordsandart #installationartist seattleartsceneisthrivin taken in Belltown, Downtown Seattle by @3dbykathy

This was part of my process for making the kombucha SCOBY pupil/inner eye for my piece, Misunderstood. This wall-mounted sculpture is on view at my solo exhibition @gallery110seattle until October 31.

My artist talk is Saturday, 10/24, at 4 pm at the same gallery. The embryo photo is a reference I used for creating the pupil. To make the paper lace, you need a sewing machine, thread, & paper, and then you soak the sewn paper in water. #scobyart #paperlace #artprocess #gallery110seattle #pioneersquareart taken in Gallery 110 Seattle by @3dbykathy

To read my published EU report about my failures & successes creating new media and processes, you can find the Zenodo link in my LinkTree bio (toward the bottom). The website of @studiohcanada also has my report. (I was an artist in residence at that great residency.) Pictured here: The jars contain kombucha and their SCOBY; four of my pieces in my solo show @gallery110seattle have dried, leather-like SCOBY. In the last photo here you can see the SCOBY drying. The SCOBY art was an unexpected success.

In the next to the last photo, you can see a box with my block of failed Hempcrete (crumbly) and failed vegan leather (stiff). In the report, I also discuss using layers of lime putty stucco over low-impact cement; I used recycled cloth like rebar for these sculptures in my solo show. #experimentalmedia #experimentalmediaart #ecoartist #takingrisksinlife #pioneersquaregallery taken in Gallery 110 Seattle by @3dbykathy
