When our Executive Director, Erin McGuire, lost her position and funding in scientific research due to the Trump Administration, she found a silver lining in a dream: a place for progressive, like-minded women and nonbinary people to rest, recharge, and connect. The vision for Root&Rise was born.

What started as Erin sharing a vision with a few friends became a cross-country wave of support. From New York to Maine to Sacramento to LA, early supporters came together to share stories, build community, and say yes to something new.

McGuire's vision for Root&Rise was brought to life with the financial backing and support of a "Founders Circle"—a group of over 40 women from across the United States who invested to help launch and shape the culture of the retreat.

As we reflect on our inaugural season of camp and gear up for 2027 Summer Camp registration to open in just one week, we are incredibly grateful that what started as a moment of upheaval has created an incredible community of liberal women and nonbinary travelers who seek joy and curiosity.

Hi! We’re Root&Rise: a space for women and nonbinary adults to relax, recharge, and build community through summer-camp style retreats, events, and gatherings…all in a 17th century château in the French countryside.

Our founder Erin and a group of friends came together to invest in this new community project, one that centers community, creativity, nourishment, and rest.

This vision and teamwork led to us finding our home in the peaceful Allier region of France. Surrounded by working farms, hiking trails, gardens, and open spaces, the château is the perfect place to unwind, relax, and re-energize.

2026 was our first year at the château, and we’re so excited for what’s to come in 2027! by @__rootandrise__

We’re already counting down the days until our second season of Summer Camp here at the château! From hanging out on the sunshine-laden grounds to group yoga classes, breadmaking, and more, we can’t wait to extend our reach and bring more campers to the French countryside in the coming year.

2027 is around the corner, and we can’t wait to share what we’re planning!

Comment “Summer” and we’ll make sure you’re in the know. by @__rootandrise__

One year ago, we said “yes” to a wild, beautiful dream. Happy first birthday to the Root&Rise Château!

When our founder Erin first shared her vision with a few friends, we couldn’t have imagined the cross-country wave of support that would follow, from NY to Maine, Sacramento to LA, all the way to France.

Today, our 17th-century home tucked away the French countryside is exactly what we dreamed it would be. Surrounded by working farms, scenic trails, and starry night skies, it is a retreat-style summer camp for women and non-binary people to play, reconnect, create, and belong.

Whether you’re joining us for summer camp, a mission-aligned off-season retreat, or a private rental, we can’t wait to welcome you to our home.

To the more than 40 women who stepped forward to invest — our incredible Founders Circle — thank you. Your trust and generosity created a safer space that will be treasured forever 💜 here’s to many more years of building this community. by @__rootandrise__
