A music video taught me how to pitch. Twenty years later, Forbes noticed.

Nine weeks at No. 1 in 2005. Then 2012, the art world, and almost no one I knew. Forbes just wrote about the zigzag between the two. @forbes

Send this to someone whose career zigzagged.

@friezeofficial week treat with a woman mid-stride over Trafalgar Square.

Lady in Blue by @tschabalalaself, on the Fourth Plinth, in bronze patinated with lapis lazuli blue. Self said, "The work needs to be shown in public for it to be completed." Standing in front of her with the city moving around us, that makes sense. She stays for two years.

Get to THIS show... @melissajoseph_art said... "in case y'all don't know!" @charlesmoffettgallery by @_arternal_

Every gallery in New York opens a new show this week. Almost none of them opens a new year.
For as long as any of us have been doing this, there was one way to carry more work: hire someone.

There is a second way now.

Reggie requests your shipping quotes and works the thread. When the shipper asks something that needs a human answer, you get a nudge rather than a guess. You book the pickup, because that relationship is yours. Then Reggie tracks the work and keeps the location current, and nobody types anything in.

The agent does the chasing. You keep the decisions.

Which means the person you hired to care for the work goes back to caring for the work: condition reports written, collection records accurate.

And Reggie is the first agent, not the only one.

A five person gallery does the same workflows as a fifty person gallery. With a tenth of the hands.

We have interviewed many registrars this year, at galleries of every size, and the job has quietly become three jobs: the care of the work itself, the logistics thread, and the data. Only the first one is the craft anybody trained for. The rest landed on the registrar because it had to land somewhere.

Reggie takes two and three.

Comment 'REGGIE' and we will send you the details, ahead of fall openings.

In most galleries, the best salesperson and the busiest admin are the same person 🎨

Over the past few months my team (@_arternal_) and I talked with dozens of galleries and registrars. Two-person shops. Mid-size galleries running a dozen fairs a year. Blue-chip houses with full registrar teams. I went in expecting to hear about software. What I found was margin, leaking quietly, at every single size.

Here's the thing. Nobody is doing anything wrong. The work gets done, often heroically, but it gets done by hand. And doing it by hand carries a cost that never shows up on a P&L:

→ Coordination eats 20% to 80% of the registrar role, and 100% during fair season → Bills of lading, read and re-typed by hand, a couple of hours every week → Consignment agreements rebuilt from scratch, by hand, every single time

Business as usual feels free, because you're already covering the salaries. But you're not really getting it for free. You're paying for it in the deals your best people were too buried to close.

The idea we keep coming back to: AI handles volume, you handle value.

So I'll ask you what I asked them. How much of your week goes to work that takes none of your judgment? 👇🏾

When @_arternal_ founder Sean Green (@sean_arternal) wanted to make inroads into the art world, he started by simply talking with its people. He never stopped.

Today, you’ll often find him at #artfairs around the world, now deeply familiar with the industry’s machinations but still reaching for an even greater understanding of where the #artmarket is moving and how he can support its next chapter.

This new iteration of ARTERNAL is the culmination of more than a decade of work that was nurtured in New Inc, the @newmuseum’s incubator.

That’s where the company started developing what Green describes as the art world’s first true CRM.

"Luddite" was always the wrong diagnosis. Galleries didn't hate software. They hated maintaining it.

You spend maybe 15% of your week actually selling. The other 85% is the busywork the software made you do. The best closer in the building barely gets to close.

The fix isn't another tool. It's a teammate that does the work for you, not one you have to feed. Take the 85% off your plate and you double the time you spend on the sale.

The FT just turned a spotlight on galleries and AI, and most read it wrong. Swipe →
84% of gallery staff already use AI every day. That's not the problem. The problem is how: 83% through personal accounts, with only 8% of galleries holding any policy at all. Client names, prices, provenance, sitting in tools nobody's watching.
The risk was never that AI is too powerful. It's that it's ungoverned.
Keep the work, the data, and the relationships inside your walls. The amateurs paste it into a chatbot. You don't have to.

DM "Reggie" to see what a gallery-native, governed version looks like.

The FT asked whether the art market needs AI. Wrong question. 84% of galleries already use it every day. The real issue isn't whether — it's that 83% are doing it through personal accounts, with no policy. Your collector list, sitting in a chatbot no one's watching.
The fix isn't to fear the tech. It's to take the drudgery and leave the judgment, the taste, and the relationships untouched — without cutting your team.

We're building for the galleries that want to be the agents of change, not the victims of it.

DM "Reggie" to see what that looks like for yours. And, I'm also happy to link 🔗 you the article.

Your costs went up 5% last year. Your sales didn't.

Let's talk about the math nobody in this business says out loud. Art fairs now eat roughly a third of everything a gallery spends — and you can't out-work it (those hours are gone) or hire your way out of it (every new salary eats the margin it was supposed to create).

For 30 years there were two options: burn out, or scale back.

There's a third one now — and it isn't "more software." I've spent nine years building for galleries, and this month I'm showing exactly what it looks like.

Follow along. If you run a gallery, it'll be worth your time. 👀
