Many of you told us at the premiere last night, that it was hard to see shots of the River Arts District before Helene-- and we agree. We know there are years of work to be done to restore our beloved city, and AFBU is just getting started.

With the road ahead in mind, we are proud to announce our new partnership with @coworkerfund!
This is a new means for us to continue fundraising for direct mutual aid, and financial assistance for service industry workers who have been affected by Hurricane Helene.

We hope you'll stay along for the ride.

I turned 40 years old and I got to be in one of my favorite places while doing it. Let’s just call this celebration “The Peace of Wild Things” birthday. It’s funny, because we came here many summers growing up and I was always so bummed we HAD to be on family vacation on MY birthday. However, it’s the only place I wanted to be in this season of my life. What a gift that I’ve spent so many birthdays here. I think I just wanted to feel small while the world around me feels so all-consuming. It’s nice to be reminded that we are just a fleck, maybe even a glittering one of granite for a short time on this planet. There is a peace in these wild things like Wendell Berry reminds us in that poem. If you know me, you know that poetry and nature have saved my life over and over again. So, go place your feet in a stream and read that poem for me, as a gift for my 40th birthday. by @_big_randi_

At first glance, this picture could be the scene of stumbling upon a small house in the woods. In actuality, it is me looking back at our home after Hurricane Helene hit. There’s the downed tree that our neighbors later banded together to cut us free, along with 6 other trees on our circle. The further you zoom in, you can see the power line snapped in half with the box shattered in our driveway that another neighbor skillfully cleared. You can’t see that we have been without power, water, and limited cell service for 7 days. I paint this picture to say, that Alex and I count ourselves to be among the fortunate ones. So many of us keep shouting from the rooftops that the destruction is unfathomable in Western NC. IT IS. I still can’t believe that something this historically catastrophic has happened here, in the place that has been my home for 20 years. I look around and slowly it begins to seep in that this change to my area is reality. There have been lives lost, the most precious gift of all, not to mention the literal places, roads, towns, and Indigenous & Appalachian culture that has been swept away forever. We will recover, but it will never be the same. The only way that I know we will come back is through the community and the neighbors around me. My life was forever changed the day I realized that our community, the collective “we”, are all we have when shit actually hits the fan. There is no government or agency that will save you in times like this. They will come help, but they will leave. Community aid is the only sustainable relief. It is the people around you giving. The people who after their lives have been impacted immediately ask, “HOW CAN I HELP?” Since the pandemic, I have been learning to be one of these. To be one, you must learn to give with no ulterior motive and only with unbiased and unbridled compassion. I am grateful to the organizers and community members that I learn from. They have taught me, and continue to that teach me, to be a better helper and doer every single day. This is my love letter to my community- Asheville, WNC, my Home- I’m not going ANYWHERE.
