“In 2004, I watched the “Wicked” Tony Awards performance on television, and it changed my life. I didn’t know much about the show, but after watching that, I used money I had saved from babysitting to buy the cast album. Growing up in a small Arkansas town with no proximity to Broadway, that television appearance made me beg my mom to drive four hours to see the tour. Back then, finding a show took initiative. Today, the show meets a kid right where they already live: on their feed. Traditionally, every campaign followed a structure comparable to what you see play out onstage: beginning, middle and end. But almost nobody experiences content from a show in that order anymore. The algorithm pushes out what’s relevant today, regardless of what the linear campaign is doing. A clip from tech or a curtain call may be the first thing an audience member sees before they even know the show’s premise. Studies show that over 40 percent of fans report buying live-event tickets after first discovering content on social feeds. While sales are, of course, always top of mind, we are trying to create content compelling enough to spark intent. Broadway marketers have to stop fighting for control of this traditional timeline and, instead, continue developing different entry points that generate real excitement. That 15-second clip has one job: Make someone curious enough to start digging until they end up in a seat. By the time a show officially launches, the audience may already be three conversations ahead of the campaign.” by @_chadburris
