Build Breakdown | Mike’s 480hp 1.9-litre NA

There are plenty of turbo MX-5s out there, but there aren’t many that knock on the door of 400hp - let alone 500. Outputting 480hp and 527Nm of torque at 2.0bar of boost, Mike’s Mk1 is part of a very exclusive club.

As is very often the case, this build spiralled far beyond what Mike had originally planned. Originally purchased as a standard 1.6, he boosted the car with an off the shelf TD04 kit back in 2020. Then, three years later, he started to crave more power. The original plan was to build a 300hp 1.6, but after he started chatting to @hummelink_modifications, a 1.8 VVT block was deemed to be a better starting point for his future power goals.

Hummelink spent around nine months on the build, and no stone was left unturned. Not only did the engine receive a stroker kit in the process, it was mated to a BMW ‘box and even mounted in an NB subframe. Even the dash received a modern makeover, the standard cluster making way for an ECU Master digi dash.

“Two weeks after the car was finished, I took it on a 2,500 km road trip through Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland,” said Mike. “Currently, I’m designing my own custom tubular low-mount manifold and I’m planning to fit a set of upgraded camshafts to finally push the setup over the 500 hp mark.”

Just wrapped up my wildest Mx-5 builds to date.

This car was rebuilt from the ground up, featuring a fully built stroker 2.0L Mazda BP-6D VVT engine paired with a Garrett G25-550 turbo for an insanely responsive setup. It laid down a massive 480hp and 527Nm of torque on pump fuel—with even more to come on ethanol in the future.

Engine management is handled by a full suite of ECU Master components, including an EMU Black ECU and a 7" ADU digital dash. The custom wiring harness is built entirely in-house, packed with additional sensors and controllers to keep everything dialed in.

The engine’s mated to a BMW 6-speed gearbox, supported by a completely overhauled undercarriage, big sticky 245 Nankang CRS wrapped around 9" hyperchrome König Countergrams, loads of chassis bracing, high-end components throughout, and a ton of custom fabrication.
