Bre, I have written out a tribute to you several times over and I haven’t been able to make it through without crying my eyes out. So, I thought I could just simply talk to you. For I long to hear your voice the most. Hey hoe, I miss you. Like crazy. It’s been almost a month since you went to dance, cook, and play slot machines with your mama up there. I miss your silly, calming voice. I miss your giggly laugh, your loud cackle, and your chuckle that followed your “uh huh, uh huh” responses when you would agree with me to move the conversation along. I miss your big hugs and your side cheek peck kisses and slaps on the ass 😂. I miss hearing “Heyyy Whitneeyyy” when we you answered the phone. I miss our late night kitchen dance parties/concerts - we WERE the show. I miss your energy, a radiation every person within a mile radius could feel. Everything was going to work out fine when you had the reins, and it always did. You could talk shit to someone and have them eating out of the palm of your hand by the end of the conversation. You were a creative and logistical genius. You were magic to me. I’ll miss the beach trips, the Mardi Gras, the plane ride adventures, the hotel shenanigans, the hungover days in bed on gummies watching reruns of 90’s female lead sitcoms. I’ll miss your sassy comebacks. The last full sentence you said to me: “Follow your dreams and keep dancing, boo boo.” I promise I will. 7+ years. 7 surgeries. 7 recoveries. Over 1100 classes and 6 Dri-Tris DONE at @otflouisvillehighlands . I reflect on it all every single day. In 2018, I flatlined in an ambulance, 2 different hospitals, and an emergency helicopter. My initial medical issues were as follows: bilateral pulmonary contusion, skull fracture, collar bone fracture, vertebrae fracture, nerve facial palsy (facial paralysis), fractured ribs, subdural hematoma (brain bleed), respiratory failure, kidney failure, and a collapsed lung. I was later diagnosed with severe hearing loss in the traumatized left ear and strabismus (basically a crooked eye) in the traumatized right eye. Many reconstructive surgeries were scheduled and completed. In the following months during my long recovery, I was told by several doctors and surgeons that I would never see properly again, hear fully again, walk without assistance again. This was the “new normal” I was told to accept. Well, I screamed and pouted and cried myself to sleep for many months. Then, one day, I decided to made moves. There is something to be said about the human condition’s ability to overcome such devastating circumstances… mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Almost halfway through my 41st trip around the sun, this shit hits different. I’m not sure where I would be without the love & support I have had over the years from friends, family, coaches (especially @otflouisvillehighlands ), fellow gym rats, and even strangers. My gratitude overflows. So, I shall take my victories when I achieve them and share with others everyday. A day six feet above ground is a day to conquer and revel in. Give yourself grace and believe in your will to continue on. Tell yourself that you are badass - in the mirror - out loud - everyday. Manifest that shit. Hola! The recovery continues 6+ years later👂🏻 👂🏻 👂🏻 Hanging at La Casita post-cochlear implant surgery with Felicia, my guardian angel, and Platano, my good luck Mardi Gras banana pillow. I have been petitioning and basically BEGGING for this surgery since the accident in 2018 wrecked (pun intended) my hearing on the left side. So pumped to finally get the procedure!
