First off - thank you @a.joyadventures for the flyer and sorry you are not here this weekend but enjoy the glass of wine while you watch old people chase a plastic ball!

Kentucky, I’m coming for you.

Another APP stop. Another weekend of making questionable noises, arguing with myself between points, and pretending my knees haven’t filed for early retirement.

The plan:

Play smart.
Stay two inches in front of me.
Remain calm.
Absolutely ignore Step 3 at least once.
Laugh about it later.

At this point I’m basically powered by pickleball, sarcasm, and whatever anti-inflammatory is closest.

Let’s see what kind of trouble we can get into, Kentucky.

MEET CHIMP #04: THE HERO CHIMP

She could reset it.

She could dink it.

She could simply keep the damn ball in play.

But where’s the glory in THAT?

Hero Chimp sees a ball below the net and thinks, “Yep. This feels like my moment.”

ATP from an angle that doesn’t technically exist? Absolutely.

Speed-up from her shoelaces? Obviously.

That backhand flick she hit successfully once six months ago? TODAY’S THE DAY.

And when it sails three courts over?

“I HAD IT.”

No. No you did not.

Here’s the problem: Hero Chimp is already living three shots ahead — celebrating the winner, hearing the crowd, watching the slow-motion replay and negotiating the documentary rights.

Meanwhile, the actual ball is sitting 2 inches in front of her.

Sometimes the smartest shot isn’t sexy.

Reset it.
Extend it.
Build it.
Then attack it.

Because great players don’t just know how to hit ridiculous shots.

They know when not to.

SEE IT.
CHOOSE.
COMMIT.

ESPN can wait.

Who’s got a Hero Chimp living rent-free in their head?

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is absolutely nothing.

Slow down. Take it all in. Breathe. Watch the sunset. Be with your person. Stop trying to solve everything five steps ahead.

I’m much better at telling other people to trust the process than actually doing it myself.

But I’m learning that not every moment needs to be productive, fixed, planned or turned into the next big thing.

Sometimes you just need to be where your feet are, appreciate the view, and deal with whatever is two inches in front of you.

And sometimes… what’s two inches in front of you is a glass of wine.

That counts as personal growth.

I can tell anyone else to rest. Be patient. Stop forcing it. Trust what we’re building.
When it’s me? Apparently I no longer speak that language.
Amelia, my high school basketball and volleyball coach in Gibraltar, believed in me long before I could. Eventually, we all have to learn to do that for ourselves. We stop living ten points ahead and come back to the only place we actually have control: two inches in front of us.
That idea became my new book, 2 Inches In Front Of You.
Amelia, I’m sorry I never told you the impact you had on me, and I’m sorry you’ll never get to read this. But your legacy lives on, two inches in front of all of us.
The braver version of you hasn’t gone anywhere. She’s still there.
Out now. Link in bio.

APP Columbus Recap 🥇🥈🥈
APP Columbus — that was a good one.
Jaime Oncins and I battled our way to GOLD in Senior Mixed 🥇 and Angela Simon and I came away with SILVER in Senior Women’s Doubles 🥈.
The senior draws may have been small, but they were absolutely stacked. No easy matches, no freebies, and I LOVE seeing the talent and level of play continuing to rise. Some seriously good pickleball and some seriously fun battles out there.
A huge thank you to The James at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center for sponsoring the event and helping make the weekend possible. Pretty special to compete at an event backed by an organization doing such important work.
Then I got to swap player mode for coach mode and coach Angela through her 3.5/4.0 doubles draw.
She and Carrie took SILVER 🥈 — upgrading last year’s bronze, so apparently we’re trending in the right direction. 😂
It was also so good catching up with our good friends Alli and Ike — even if they had the audacity to beat Angela and Carrie in the final. Apparently friendship has boundaries. 😂
Was coaching Angela fun? Yes.
Was it possibly more stressful than playing my own matches? Also yes.
But I love that we get to do this together — compete, coach, travel, celebrate the wins, learn from the losses and occasionally test the strength of our relationship from opposite sides of a pickleball fence. 😂
Sadly, no conservation or wildlife detours on this trip. Angela has to head back and take care of some business, while I’m staying in Columbus for a few more days to teach some clinics before jumping straight back into competition mode for MLP/CSP this coming weekend.
So Columbus… apparently I live here now. 😂
Great battles. Great people. Great weekend.
And we’re not done yet. 💛

Thank you to the APP Tour all the refs and volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make this happen.

And of course my sponsors for believing in me, this sport and this journey. Bc without you it would not be possible!!!

Their young will inherit what we leave behind. 💔

Gibraltar’s beauty took my breath away. Then I saw what its Barbary macaques were playing with.

Long strips of plastic from the dump beside where the largest troop lives and raises its young.

An endangered species. Europe’s only free-ranging monkeys. And our garbage engulfing their everyday lives.

Keeping wild places clean takes more than just tossing out our rubbish. It takes keeping our waste out of wildlife’s reach.

Their home. Our responsibility.

Share this. The beauty deserves our attention—and so does what’s happening beside it.

Off to APP Columbus, where Angela and I are both competing this weekend in separate events.
Which means when I’m not playing, I’m courtside being her loudest (and most unsolicited) coach, and vice versa. Bags packed, paddles charged, knees negotiated with. Come find us on court, and bring snacks.

I could have been one of the children taken.
Today, I walked down the Montreal street where I grew up during the Sixties Scoop.
I was an Indigenous child being raised by an Indigenous mother who was still a child herself. She did everything she could to protect me.
So today isn’t history to me.
It’s my history.
And on Truth and Reconciliation Day, I keep coming back to that first word:
TRUTH.
We cannot reconcile with a history we’re unwilling to tell.
And to my American friends: please don’t erase the painful or shameful chapters of your history. Teach them. Talk about them. Learn from them.
Because hiding history doesn’t change what happened.
Here in Canada, the work doesn’t end when we take off the orange shirt tonight.
Learn whose land you live on.
Listen to Indigenous voices.
Listen to Survivors.
Learn the history that makes you uncomfortable.
Truth first. Then reconciliation.
🧡 Every Child Matters. Yesterday. Today. Every day.

WHEN THE PERSON YOU LOVE STEPS INTO YOUR WORLD — AND DECIDES TO HELP PROTECT IT. 🌎🏓
This one was personal.
For years, conservation has been my world. Photography has been how I tell its stories, and increasingly, I’ve been asking myself how I can bring the people and communities around me into that work.
So when I had the opportunity to connect @ladygibraltar with @oceanconservancy Protect Where We Play, I knew there was something powerful here.
Sport has an extraordinary ability to bring people together.
And at Solutions House during Climate Week NYC, I got to watch those two worlds collide.
Lee joined @amanitoomer_81 Toomer, @hellojasmyne and @17sport_ , with Jenna DiPaolo moderating, for a conversation about how athletes and sporting communities can become part of protecting the places where we live, compete and play.
But then Lee said something I wasn’t expecting.
She said I had inspired her to become more involved in conservation.
And yeah… that got me. 💙
Because this is exactly why I do this.
Not because I believe one photograph, one story or one person is going to save the planet.
But because inspiration creates action. And action spreads.
Lee has a platform and a community I could never reach on my own. Now she gets to take this message into locker rooms, pickleball courts, tournaments and conversations around the world.
That’s how movements grow.
Different worlds.
Different platforms.
One planet.
And one very proud conservation photographer watching the woman she loves use her voice to help protect it. 🌎
Protect where you play. Protect what you love.

Hair done. Nails done. Joe’s slice secured. Now let’s talk about saving the planet. 🍕🌊

Lee and I headed to Solutions House in NYC to represent Game ChangeHER alongside Ocean Conservancy’s Protect Where We Play initiative.

We got ready like it was a big night out—because it was. We love this game, and we want the places we play to thrive long after the match is over. 💚🏓

From a New York slice to a room full of people working on solutions: this is what it looks like when sports meets purpose.

What’s one thing your club could do to create less waste? Tell us below. 👇

Wheels up, notes out, solutions loading. ✈️🌎

Heading to New York for Climate Week and Solutions House — bringing sport into a much bigger conversation about the places we play, the planet we share, and the responsibility that comes with having a platform.

A little travel. A little preparation. A lot of purpose.

NYC, let’s talk solutions.

ALL ABOARD THE HOT MESS EXPRESS. 🚂🔥

Three women. One trip to Montreal. Approximately zero reliable body temperatures.

I’m back in my hometown with Lee and Sharon, my childhood best friend—the woman who knew me before menopause and therefore has far too much evidence.

We’re talking about the stuff women usually whisper about: hot flashes in winter, walking into a room with no idea why, sleep that lasts 11 minutes, and the sudden urge to tell everyone exactly what we think.

Is it menopause? Is it travel? Is it the three of us together? We’ll investigate. Poorly.

Follow The Hot Mess Express for the moments we usually edit out. And tell us: what’s the most ridiculous thing menopause has made you do? 👇

Featuring Angela @Lee @Sharon
Products we actually use will be tagged in each episode.
