CRAB & BEE

💥✨Sound Game Experiment ✨💥

Saturday 7 Nov
7.30pm
Urban Room
Roland Levinsky Gallery

For tickets, see link in bio!

Sound Game Experiment is an original performance created by Crab & Bee (Plymouth-based arts duo visual artist @doctorhelenbeee and performance maker Phil Smith) specifically for the Urban Room. Crab & Bee are deploying their diagrammatical method (as described in their book ‘Diagrammatical Performances’ [Routledge, 2026]) to address elements of the history, folklore and future uses of Plymouth Sound. From Drake and the witches summoning a storm against the Armada, via experimental autonomous submarine craft, to the strange cryptid report by Captain Peter M’Quhae from HMS Daedalus at anchor in the Hamoaze in 1848. Drawing on extensive walks around and swims in the Sound, Crab & Bee will deploy a range of performance-methods including storytelling, ceremony, and the use of miscellaneous materials to map out these stories. Using the Urban Room as a ‘three-dimensional metaphor’ Crab & Bee’s ‘Sound Game Experiment’ will animate historical events, geological and geographical becomings, and fantastical imaginings.

This new work has been developed in response to Jill Craigie’s 1946 film, The Way We Live and The Box Plymouth’s exhibition that marks the 80th anniversary of the film.

SUPER SATURDAY - @theboxplymouth
Creatures for Change Workshop
2-4pm
24 October
Urban Room
Ground floor, Roland Levinsky Building
University of Plymouth

Workshop designed and led by @devontippingdesigns

So pleased to see the work that we (@joannedorothea and @everydayelvis) started with @theboxplymouth and @plymartscinema back in 2023 to imagine the way we live ‘now’, start to take shape publicly this autumn!

In March this year, I brought together 40 practitioner-researchers and city culture folks to shape a public programme of performance, artworks, workshops and walks to respond to The Box Plymouth’s upcoming exhibition that marks the 80th anniversary of Jill Craigie’s film The Way We Live.

Over the summer, I’ve worked with colleagues to shape these ideas and produce 8 new projects, supported by the Urban Room’s @iamhannahirwin and Katie Shorten. These sit alongside work by @katharineswillis and others to form a big, city-wide autumn festival involving @nudgecommunity and many others

First up is this workshop for The Box Plymouth’s October 24 Super Saturday. Devon Tipping will be running Creatures for Change, which connects rural and urban folklore - as happens in The Way We Live, when the Copperwheat family is moved to Horrabridge. Imagine your guardian spirit that will help you imagine Plymouth’s future!

Free, but booking is required. Follow links to the online shop in The Box’s bio

I’ll be posting more information about upcoming events in the next week. But hold 7 November as the next big day, with walks, screenings and a new performance by Crab & Bee (Phil Smith and @doctorhelenbeee) by @aapiccini

How did that happen??

Summer flew by in a haze of exhibitions, actions, screenings and bid writing. Suddenly, it’s our first week of teaching here @fineartinplymouth

This year I’m mainly supervising 8 glorious PhD projects and looking after my favourite undergraduate Artist Placement modules.

To mark the 80th anniversary of Jill Craigie’s film The Way We Live and the associated upcoming exhibition @theboxplymouth I’m inviting our Artist Placement 1 students to respond to the film by placing themselves in the city and creating a participatory workshop that will work with others to imagine different futures for Plymouth.

The work they do this term will help prepare them to propose and undertake 35-70hr placements in the second semester for Artist Placements 2. In that module, students produce individual artworks in response to their placements, with a focus on the ‘usefulness’ of art (arte util).

With a couple more days to dive into Bathing Places, we’ve been immersing ourselves in the exhibition’s wonderful sound works:

Aileen Olgilvie @ails_ceol THE THING IS…THE SEA WILL ALWAYS WIN
A sound piece responding to the shifting swimscape of the Golspie Mermaids and the fragile relationship between body, land, and sea on Scotland’s north-east coast

Lara Band @_laraband ABOVE BELOW WITH
Heading south, passing Cawsand and then Kingsand, seeing how far I can get before I have to return for the last ferry…

Kate Paxman @katepaxman GREEN WORLD
Exploring the transformation of coastal habitats by warming and expanding seas to imagine a near future where lands and waters are continually in rapid flux

*Bathing Places* FINAL WEEK & Closing Party

We're open tomorrow and Saturday.

Closing party from 5 on Saturday and then off to @plymartscinema for our film night.

Featured:
Mauve Loch (detail) @connieliebschner_art
Connie is a Glasgow-based artist inspired by the shifting qualities of the Scottish landscape and experiences at the water's edge, using translucent layers of gesso, inks, and acrylics too evoke depth, texture and atmosphere. She is a founding member of @g20collective_artists

Untitled (detail) Phil Smith
Phil is an artist, performance-maker, writer and researcher, and one half of Crab & Bee. For Bathing Places, Phil evokes the Livingstone Road Baths, Foleshill, Coventry, where he learned to swim. Dettol from the footbath beneath the collage brings a Proustian note to the assemblage.

Trial By Water (detail) @elisamargot_
Elisa Margot Winters is an Estonian/American artist based in Plymouth who works with ancient traditions: alchemy, folklore, mythology. In trial by water she draws on witch trials where the infamous "swimming test" was just to judge innocence. by @aapiccini

JOIN US AT THE BUREAU FOR A LUNCHTIME BITE

Start your week with us in the Bureau for our new series, Bureau Bites. These informal, 45min online gatherings are open to all, whether you’re a postgraduate student, a heritage manager or a senior consultant. Keep an eye on our LinkedIn account (link in bio) where we’ll post a link to a short text (30 min read) the week before we meet. We understand how dynamic, energetic and enterprising (ie busy) we all are so please join the conversation even you haven’t been able to make time to read and reflect in advance. Readings will be a mix of websites, blogs, reports, excerpts from academic papers.

The aim is to reconnect us with our communities of practice and to create space for the kind of thinking we might not be able to do on the daily grind. We invite participants to start a light-touch reflective journal to help document these conversations, which you may find useful in your work.

✨Monday, 12 October: Does heritage really matter?

✨Monday, 9 November: When loss is more!

✨Monday, 7 December: Beyond engagement? Art, heritage and placemaking

✨Monday, 11 January: Strategies, frameworks and plans – why have them?

✨Monday, 8 February: Nothing ages faster than the future

✨Monday, 8 March: Place, landscape and more-than-human interventions

✨Monday, 5 April: ‘No, I don’t want to do workshops with NEETs!’ Beyond instrumentalising heritage

✨Monday, 10 May: Not another toolkit! Working with creative approaches to unblock cross-sector heritage research, management and policy

These gatherings also mark the start of ButCH’s journey towards being a business partnership and soft launch of our redesigned website (still in progress)

BATHING PLACES: WATER WORLDS

8pm
26 Sept
Plymouth Arts Cinema
@plymartscinema

In association with our Bathing Places exhibition (37 Looe Street gallery, open Thursday-Saturday 11-5 until 26th September), this special screening at Plymouth Arts Cinema includes all the artists’ films shown as part of the exhibition, as well as a first screening of Geography of an Archive by Vesna Lukic and Nicole Khayat, whose painting and archival works evoking Khayat Beach in Palestine are included in the exhibition.

These films reflect a spectrum of watery worlds and bodies in bodies of water. Artists connect. In these films, the waters of other seas lap onto the shores of the Sound, bathers from other beaches visit. Water finds its way and we are reminded of our place on a planet. 71% of the Earth’s surface is water-covered and yet pollution, war, climate change imperil so much of that resource. Bathing is an act of immersion. Becoming part of another element. An eternal act yet one not to be taken for granted. In these films, the liquid treasure of these spaces and beings is vividly and variously represented.

Head on over to @plymartscinema to book your tickets. And while you’re there, consider getting a membership to the cinema to keep your cosy this winter!

Programme running time: 90 mins
