With the Plymouth City Living Framework consultation going live today, and The Way We Live exhibition that opened on Saturday at The Box, Plymouth, this is a great moment to reflect on what home and belonging mean to us and the ways in which we want to live in the future.

On Saturday, I ran a creative workshop as part of The Box’s festival of activities accompanying the exhibition, organised by Angela Piccini.

Inspired by Jill Craigie’s original 1946 film and the mythology of Dartmoor, the workshop invited participants to explore their hopes for Plymouth through drawing and collage. We imagined 'creatures for change', using their stories to reflect on the city we live in and the one we want to create. We then asked, could your creature find a home in Plymouth’s future? Does the City Living Framework reflect your aspirations? What is working well, and what would you like to see change?

The workshop created space to imagine and share ideas about our city in a creative and accessible way and explore how illustration can help us think differently about the places we live, while feeling empowered to have a voice in shaping their future.
A big thank you to everyone who braved the storm to take part, and to The Box and The University of Plymouth for making space for these conversations.

If you haven't already, take a look at The Way We Live exhibition at The Box and consider contributing to the Plymouth City Living Framework consultation that is live until the 7th December.

Dear Dip-a-Day Diary,

The gulls gather on the sewage line. Flock and frenzy. The advisory not to swim remains. The water's clear and warm making this outrageous stockade that those asset extraction magnates have made for us of our inland waters all the more devastating. I'm the only dipper at Moldova on a beautiful morning, apart from those gulls extracting their own torment from that mess.
But on the rocks at Moon Singing Steps - where we serenaded the August full moon, where we swam in the swell of the eclipse - who should I meet but Mo. Mo the most magical. A crumhorn is a double reed woodwind instrument favoured in the olden days by such patrons of the arts as Henry VIII and denizens of Brittany spiraling spiraling. Crumhorns are thin things with curved ends - crum as in crumpet and crumpled. Mo says: a crumhorn is kind of like an oboe bent round at the bottom like a walking stick and which produces a very annoying sound, whereas a bombard is like the bagpipes chanter without the bag or pipes, and which produces an even more annoying sound. Mo doesn't have a crumhorn but he does have a bombard and a walking stick and together I think we have done our bit for this day. Any more and Mo might accidentally summon the coastguard.

Swim location: Moldova
Today: International Crumhorn Day
Companions: Mo, the Bombardier; Angela; Ma Pen; foolish gulls; an edified family who may Google crumhorns later.
People of the day: apparently these people - Whistlebow - who have crumhorns and are here playing some Canadiana: https://youtu.be/pOpxIMdvBrk?is=EyRtDKmnE8ZGWw0k
