Make food Instagram great again.

Where else would I want to celebrate my 40th besides Maine? From Bissell to Bad Neighbors, up to Primo finally and back down to Cuties (an amazing coffee experience). A weekend gone too quickly but never without gratitude and love. taken in Portland, Maine by @aaronmello_

40. What a weird number to look at. I don’t feel 40. I occasionally act my age but I haven’t felt it really at any point in my life. There are days I feel like I have the wisdom of an 80 year-old Buddha while I balance that maturity with laughing at fart jokes. I have the curiosity of a kid and that will never leave. ā€œMen grow old, they don’t grow up,ā€ as my confidant Vinnie has said recently.

I heard about a poll asking which decade was better: your 20s or 30s. It got me thinking about my own and while they both have their notably good moments they both came with times of incredible struggle, but more importantly growth from it. If I had to choose, I’d say my 30s were pretty incredible. I got to climb mountains I’ve wanted to since I was a kid, I grew more mentally than I ever thought possible, I became a Dad x2 (which I’m way more tired this time around), met an incredible and supportive woman, own and operate two businesses (one with my best friend) in which I truly love, got to see my first born graduate high school and spend Father’s Day in Hawaii with the boys - all while never missing any school or sport event. That was always intentional.

So here we go to more grey beard hairs, hikes, quiet moments, slow coffee and gratitude.

ā€œSome people put their money in assets-stocks, bonds, property. Others invest in relationships or accomplishments, knowing that they can draw on these things just as easily as others can draw funds from a bank account. But a third type, Seneca says, invests in themselves— in being a good and wise person.ā€

Fall, captured throughout New England. In tiny NH towns, coastal Maine communities and places I’ve once called ā€œhome.ā€

Building something from nothing is a feeling some will never experience. But it’s all I know. And I love it.

Thank you endlessly to those around me. I’ve never been good about asking for help but I am learning. And I’m so grateful.

Support small, family business.

We are less than 48 hours until open. I figured I would put my thoughts out to share before our focus sinks entirely into Saturday. An idea Vinnie and I have talked about for the last 5 years has finally come to life. How unreal this seems.

I was first going to mention our personal history, how we met in 2003, the night before we flew to Arizona together but it would simply be too long.

Especially in business, nothing ever goes as planned. Perpetual electrical issues, plumbing challenges, permitting complications, licenses and learning curves kept us shuddered throughout Summer. I’ve run my business since 2018 but never have I experienced such setbacks, general lack of communication and inability to get what I need from vendors as I have with opening a (ā€œphysicalā€) business. There were points we thought we’d never open and we’d just sell off the trailer, wipe our hands and call it done.

So - why are we opening a coffee shop? To show people that coffee is widely misunderstood. This is the desire to educate, show people what coffee can be, how it brings people together, why it’s important to know where their coffee comes from, what coffee can actually be and have fun doing it. While it’s a little more difficult in a trailer vs. a brick-and-mortar, we are building a community.Ā

I remember the feeling of finding a GOOD new coffee shop, being so stoked to grab a coffee, sit and read a book or just people watch and be in the moment. And still, I feel that way. We want to (eventually) provide that for others as well.Ā What better way to learn then to do it from the ground up.

A huge thank you to Larry at @leyden_street_coffee for not only helping us get our espresso machine, but also providing our coffee and helping answer any questions we had along the way. Kelly & Brian with @traditions_bakeshop who welcomed us with open arms, asking ā€œwhat can WE do to help youā€ from the first conversation.

My guy started 13th grade this week šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø the fork in the road for an 18 year old is one I don’t envy but you’re already on a MUCH better path than I was. I’m so proud of you, bubba.
