Before Nicaragua’s presidential election on November 7th, the Biden administration stated they were not going to acknowledge the election results because Daniel Ortega and the socialist party FSLN were favored to win.

First, who gives the US the right to determine another sovereign country’s right to choose its leader? Nicaragua has been defending itself from US intervention for the last 200 years.

Second, as one voter told me (5th slide), “Daniel Ortega is the first president in the country’s history that cares about the poor people.” They voted for Ortega so that the country could continue its progress and not go backward.

Here is a list of some social gains from the FSLN that the people of Nicaragua are defending.

Since 2006
22 New hospitals
63 rehabilitated hospitals
60% decrease in maternal mortality
56% decrease in child mortality
52.7% reduction of extreme poverty

They’ve built 72.8 kilometers (45 miles) of new roads connecting the country. The government promises to keep investing in infrastructure. The new proposal includes 2 new international airports, 6 commercial cargo seaports (3 on each coast of the country), 2 tourist seaports, 6 land ports (4 on the northern west-end and 2 on the southern west-end). Plus 24,763 kilometers (15,387 miles) of national road network to build. Nicaragua also ranks #1 in the region with quality roads.

In addition, Nicaragua is the safest country in the region. In 2019, the United Nations reported that Nicaragua has the lowest homicide rate of 8.3 murders per 100,000 citizens. In contrast, Honduras and El Salvador reported 80 murders per 100,000 citizens.

I was lucky to be one of over 200 international delegates who witnessed their electoral process. A big thanks to the Asociación de Trabajadores del Campo – ATC for the invite. Please follow @FriendsATC.

Whether through indifference, incompetence, or political calculation, these leaders have allowed atrocities to unfold slowly, often being paid by the Israeli lobby to provide political cover for Israel’s war crimes.

In the last few weeks, journalists and moderators have asked the two mayoral candidates, Karen Bass (@Karenbassla) and Nithya Raman @nithyaforthecity), about their positions on Palestine and Gaza.

Although this is a step in the right direction, considering that before 2023, running for local office, you didn’t need a position on the occupation of Palestine.

Since then, the whole world has seen how the U.S./Israeli government has treated Palestinians, and it is something that Palestinians have been telling us for nearly a century.

Asking the two candidates if they believe what is happening in Gaza is a genocide is lip service.

At the same time, Palestinians have been saying that Israel operates under an apartheid system.

40 years ago, our mayor and city council voted to cut ties with the apartheid government of South Africa.

It is time we ask the two candidates and our city council (@lacity) whether they will follow in the footsteps of our history and use their political and economic power and leverage to stop another Palestinian child from being killed and a Palestinian family from being displaced because of our own government’s actions. There is a lot they can do to help Palestine.

As ICE raids and fires raged throughout the Southland, a small family in Bell Gardens was looking forward to celebrating their daughter’s 8th grade culmination.

But a few days before graduation, their father, Miguel Lorenzana Márquez, also known as Mike, received a call from his immigration attorney informing him he had an appointment with USCIS at 9 a.m. that same day.

Shortly after he checked in, Márquez was detained by ICE agents. His family had no idea that by dinner time, they would be separated by steel doors and unanswered questions.

Why saying “Free Palestine” isn’t antisemitic.

“It involves rejecting the politics of ethnic supremacy, or an ethnostate, and instead embracing a future based on equality and justice for everyone.”

The geopolitical drama surrounding the soccer tournament pulled back the curtain on a quiet Iranian diaspora of families and business owners bridging two worlds, who poured into the streets during the competition to embrace their national Team Melli.

Words by Abraham Márquez

“We take pride in being Iranian, but also in being Mexican,” said Sadegh Galavi as he waited for a second day outside the Tijuana Marriott Hotel for another glimpse of the national soccer team of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Galavi was born and raised in Zahedan, Iran, and has been living in Tijuana for four years. “We want to let the team know we are here and we support them. We want them to know that Tijuana is a great place,” Galavi added.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup allowed Tijuana to showcase its tradition to the world and added another chapter to its history of hospitality this summer by welcoming the national soccer team of the Islamic Republic of Iran with respect and affection, showing the world the long, deeply rooted cultural philosophy of “mi casa es tu casa.”

For weeks, the border city became an international attraction and a new home for Team Melli, the official nickname of Iran’s national soccer team, amid the U.S.- and Israel-led war on Iran, which imposed visa restrictions that prevented the team from staying in the United States for the 48-team tournament. On May 25, the Mexican government announced that Mexico would host the soccer team. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the decision after U.S. visa denials and security concerns prompted a rush to FIFA’s decision-makers.

Unionized workers at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), who are among the lowest-paid museum workers in the city, escalated their push to negotiate a new contract and wage increases by staging public protests.

Represented by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (@afscme36 ) District Council 36, the union argues that the people who maintain one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and cultural institutions can no longer afford to live in the city where they work.
