ATLA: On conviction by @ablueandwhite

A quietly important show opened this past weekend, and a significant moment in Amia Yokoyama’s practice: her solo presentation at the ICA, alongside Carl Cheng, curated by Amanda Sroka.

Ambitious, fearless, and genuinely searching work deserves to be met with ambition of its own. Amia’s practice is a powerful example of what becomes possible when an artist follows curiosity without prescribing its destination. Her work is intellectually rigorous, formally adventurous, and deeply committed to the possibilities of looking.

The dialogue between Amia’s work and Carl Cheng’s across the two spaces is extraordinary. To bring two distinct practices into such a precise, unexpected, and genuinely mind-bending conversation is a serious curatorial achievement.

This is the kind of work and thinking that makes Los Angeles such an important place for contemporary art—and exactly the kind of risk-taking we believe in at ATLA.

Very proud to be working with Amia, and very excited to see this presentation take its place in Los Angeles.

There’s five months to see it. Please make the time. On view through February 28, 2027 by @ablueandwhite

Join ALTA (@atla_works) co-founder Jenny Blumenfield (@ablueandwhite) as she details the gallery’s two-person booth at Independent (@@independent_hq) featuring Japan-based artists Kuniko Kinoto and Yoshinazu Tanaka.

Kinoto is a ceramic sculptor “whose practice traces the shifting boundary between natural phenomena and human intervention.” On the other hand, Tanaka’s (@yoshikazutanaka_ceramics) ceramic practice “explores transformation, rebirth, and the cycles of decay and regeneration. Centered on sculptural form rather than function, Tanaka breaks down old, abandoned, or failed ceramic sculptures and reconstructs them into newly imagined forms.”

It takes an artist to know an artist.

ATLA (@atla_works) started as a roaming curatorial project between my husband and I. At the start of this year—just after the fires, and after several years of popping up in varying spaces—we announced our first show in our first brick-and-mortar home.

Tomorrow, Kuniko Kinoto’s (@kishouseki) solo show opens with a reception from 4–6pm and marks our final exhibition of the year. Two years in the making, this moment carries a rare weight: Kuniko Kinoto has flown here for the first time in 15 years to be present. Her command of clay is both technical and intuitive; every piece reflects a mastery earned over decades. As someone who works with ceramics myself, I find her practice disarming in the best way—it expands my understanding of what the medium can hold.

This exhibition feels like a return to ATLA’s core ethos: rigor, clarity, and work that rewards deep looking.

With 2026 just around the corner, we’re looking ahead to a group exhibition curated by Nichole Caruso (@nichole__caruso), the host, the guest. The title comes from a haiku Nichole first encountered in a catalog from an exhibition of James Lee Byars and Seung-taek Lee. Her connection to Byars runs deep through Michael Werner, the gallery where she is the Director, which represented him in his lifetime and continues to do so today. The poem describes a moment of stillness and mutual regard—the kind of presence and reverence Nichole’s exhibition embodies.

After that comes ATLA’s inclusion in Felix Art Fair.

Thank you for being on this journey with us. It is just the beginning.

See you tomorrow. <3

Tucked between Los Angeles's Little Armenia and Los Feliz, ATLA (@atla_works) is quietly reshaping what an art gallery can look like.

Founded by artist and ceramicist Jenny Hata Blumenfield (@ablueandwhite) and music exec and curator Ryu Takahashi, the space weaves their divergent creative backgrounds into a cohesive vision rooted in reverence—for high craft, community, and traditions new and old. With physical roots in Los Angeles and a deep cultural kinship with Tokyo, ATLA was born from a desire to honor overlooked artistry, celebrate the quiet endurance of crafted savoir-faire, and create an intergenerational, intercultural dialogue that flows freely across the Pacific.

Still just a girl punk at heart. Hope you stay for the last slide—link in bio 💙

I’m so grateful to have sat down with Aleina Edwards (@aleinaedwards ) a fellow LA native, for Ceramics Now (@ceramicsnow ). Aleina, Director of Craig Krupp Gallery in Santa Monica, is a true multi-hyphenate and kindred spirit. As a Writer/Editor/Communications strategist, we spoke of alternative existences, craft history, community, and loss. Very thankful for all the creatives whose shoulders I stand

Did I tell you that, in addition to having a baby, ATLA said goodbye to our Echo Park stint and found a permanent home across from Barnsdall Art Park? February 2025 is looking mighty bright. @atla_works by @ablueandwhite
