🗣Meet @drnikiasrobert - the Founder and Executive Director of @abolitionistsanctuary ✨

•••

💭 Inspired by the narratives of poor Black mothers’ lawbreaking, Dr. Robert created Abolitionist Sanctuary to honor the narratives of poor Black mothers who exercise practical wisdom by violating laws to overcome interlocking systems or racial, gender and class inequities that impede survival and human flourishing.

“I had a profound admiration for my mother’s survival strategies that proved salvific for our family. In fact, we benefited from an unlawful salvation. Because of her faith and extralegal survival practices, we kept a roof over our heads and clothes on our back.”

Abolitionist Sanctuary emerged at a crucial time, and the work we do continues to shed light on how important it is for us to #RestoreRepairRebuild our society while centering Black mothers!

☕ SIP TEA: You’re one of ONE.

You have the oil. You have the vision. And yes… God gave YOU the juice. 🙌🏾

What’s been placed inside of you wasn’t meant for anybody else to duplicate. You are the originator not the imitation!

So stop looking around for confirmation of what God already put inside of you.

Trust the vision. Protect the oil. Walk in your purpose.

Because when God gives you the juice, nobody else can make your flavor. ☕✨

The 5 C’s come out of the survival strategies of Black mothers.

Watch what this country calls her. Negligent. Reckless. Fraudulent. Deviant. Every single thing she did to keep her children alive gets written up as evidence against her , and then handed to a caseworker, a prosecutor, a judge.

We read the same life and see the opposite.

💜Compassion — SHE feeds the child who is not hers, because hunger does not check the birth certificate.

💜Care — SHE answers what the harm actually requires. Care, not cages.

💜Creativity — SHE makes a way out of no way, and they indict her for the way she made.

💜Courage — SHE stands in rooms built to shame her and does not leave without what her family needs.

💜Community — SHE refuses the lie that any of us survives alone.

What the carceral state files as vice, WE NAME AS VIRTUE!

This is how we BUILD an abolitionist sanctuary.

Repair. Restore. Rebuild. 💜

At Abolitionist Sanctuary, these three words guide the transformative work we do:

🟣 We repair harm.
🟣 We restore relationships.
🟣 We rebuild more just and equitable communities.

Because real change takes more than talking about what’s broken. It requires people willing to do the work.

The 3R’s summarize our theory of change and also how we define abolition!

Today is National Voter Registration Day — the largest single-day registration drive in the country. We need your vote to rebuild a better democracy!

Take the two minutes to confirm or newly register. Then read this, because for Black mothers the ballot has always had extra paperwork attached.

69 million American women have a birth certificate that doesn’t match the name they go by now. About 80% of married women change their last name; about 5% of married men do. So when legislation makes a birth certificate the proof of citizenship you need to register, the burden doesn’t fall evenly. It falls on women. And it falls hardest on women who can’t afford to take a Tuesday off work to stand in a records office.

The SAVE America Act passed the House in February and was blocked in the Senate. It is not law. But the idea behind it — that the right to vote should require a paper trail most women don’t have in a drawer — did not get blocked. It got rescheduled.

Now add what Black mothers already carry to the polls: a felony conviction in the family that erased somebody’s vote, a shift that can’t be left, childcare that doesn’t exist, an address that changed because the rent did, a name that changed because a marriage did.

Voter suppression rarely announces itself. It just makes the line longer for the people with the least time.

So today: register. Then check the registration you already have. Then check your mother’s, your daughter’s, your church mother’s.

Your name belongs on that roll.

Sixty-three years ago today, four girls were killed getting ready for youth Sunday.

Addie Mae Collins, 14.
Denise McNair, 11.
Carole Robertson, 14.
Cynthia Wesley, 14.

They were murdered in a church basement in Birmingham because that sanctuary had become a staging ground for freedom. The bomb was not aimed only at four children. It was aimed at what a Black church makes possible.

We remember them by refusing the lie that sanctuary is a place to hide. Sanctuary is a place to organize.

Say their names. Then believed in building the sanctuary we deserve bit that they died for. 🕯️

September isn’t an introduction. It’s a RE-ENTRY. 🔑

Maybe you’ve seen our name. Maybe you’ve followed the work. Maybe this is your first time meeting us.

Either way… welcome to the Sanctuary. 💜

This month, we’re not just telling you who we are, we’re showing you why this work matters, what we’re building, and where YOU fit in it.

The doors are open.
The work continues.
It’s time to RE-ENTER THE SANCTUARY. 🤗
