What does it mean to reimagine the future of democracy in America?

Thank you to Kettering Foundation and SojoAction for inviting this group of leaders into a space to safely explore this thought with a willingness to go beyond what feels politically possible.

We are restored and hopeful for the future of collective action for young people. #futuretense

Communion Sunday! God was glorified.

Sermon title: When Freedom isn’t Enough
Proclamation: This is our Jubilee Year
Text: Luke 4:17-19
Question: What do we do when freedom isn’t enough?

In Luke 4:17-19, Jesus describes the Kin-dom of God in his ministerial vision, which wasn’t just about setting captives free and meeting material needs but building a new social order, the year of the Lord’s favor, jubilee, where debts are forgiven, the land is restored, and empires overturned.

This is America’s 5th jubilee year as it turns 250. However, what do we do with America’s independence when folk are still hungry, houseless, and harmed by injustices?

Here’s where we shouted: America’s freedom isn’t Jesus’ Jubilee. America’s freedom is a check we couldn’t cash, but we can take Jesus Jubilee to the bank!

This is our jubilee year - God will make good on every promise and when freedom isn’t enough, we must build a more just and equitable world, the Kin-dom of God.

July 4th is a reminder that while white property-holding men got independence, the rest of us did not get freedom.

What is freedom if America can celebrate 250 years of independence but cannot recognize or give reparations for the 400 years of U.S. slavery?

What is freedom when America can honor the emancipation proclamation in 1863, but still have slaves in Galvenston Texas in 1865?

What is freedom when 48 of the 56 Declaration signers still directly profited and benefited from slavery?

When America is the land of the free but home to more than 2 million people incarcerated, I declare all of us are not free.

In fact, what do we do when freedom is not enough?

Here’s the Declaration of Independence: WE WANT MORE THAN FREEDOM!

Jesus reads the mission of his ministry in Luke 4:18 and he envisions a new system.

Happy Juneteenth! ✊🏽

5 years ago today, I launched my nonprofit organization, Abolitionist Sanctuary, on Juneteenth because we believe in freedom over poverty, punishment, policing, and prisons. We believe in the autonomy of Black mothers who make a way out of now way to provide for their families. We believe in a God of liberation and Jesus—a first century abolitionist.

Today we celebrate freedom at the cookout and five years of building sanctuary on the front lines.

Support our annual campaign and help us reach $50,000 for 5 years. Link in bio. AbolitionistSanctuary.org/donate.

Do you know that 80 percent of women who are incarcerated are mothers?

Mothers are the life source of our communities, churches, and country. When mothers are removed from their homes and incarcerated, an entire ecosystem suffers.

Listen to our guest, Leslie Campbell, share her survival story when abuse, addiction, and abandonment separated her from her two-year old daughter after going to prison. However, Leslie’s story doesn’t end there.

Why does our understanding of atonement matter? Does God require a sacrifice for salvation?

In today’s episode, we examine penal substitutionary atonement with Rev. Lamar and why it’s being challenged, especially in conversations about justice, harm, and accountability.

Harmful church teachings about sacrifice and the cross have been death-dealing, especially for Black people.
