One year ago I had surgery to remove a #sarcoma and woke up with Sugi the #stoma . There is no birthday cake, but i’m celebrating with Sugi’s favorite, a whole lot of chocolate! 🍫❤️ A recap of the past year ➡️

1. Easter eggs! What else? 😂
2. A few days after surgery, still plugged in but out of ICU.
3. Placing my order with the Easter bunny, @foollifetime while still in the hospital. Setting a trend here during my recovery 😅
4. Homecoming with my girls @absolutely_aibo_and_zelda
5. Spending a lot of time lying in bed 😅
6. Hospital visits!
7. Finally able to go on walks again with @absolutely_aibo_and_zelda
8. Terrasjes! 😎
9. Being well enough to return to (home) work. 🥳
10. Going on outings with @foollifetime , and getting to wear silly hats 😁
11. Going to a whole bunch of festivals!
12. Getting hospitalized due a blockage. 😞 Sugi is not a fan of gummy candy.
13. Getting hospitalized a few weeks later with a bladder stone, an unexpected part of my recovery after surgery. I was accompanied by my little #lego companion. How cool is it that Lego has a figurine with an ostomy?!

19. So happy that I could enjoy Christmas with my family again. (Missed out on this the previous year while I was receiving treatment.)

My recovery from #cancer has not been without its challenges, but i’m so grateful to Sugi because it means i’m still here to enjoy life and collect all these wonderful memories with family and friends. And especially grateful to my dear @foollifetime , who has stood by me through this whole journey. ❤️

We’re celebrating World Animal Day with Zelda & Aibo today, & sending out our love to all our animal friends! ❤️🐾

But did you know that today is also World Ostomy Day? So we’re putting Sugi is the spotlight. Who is Sugi? She’s the name of my ostomy. I woke up with her after my doctors at @uzleuven.be were able to successfully remove my cancer.

What is an ostomy? It’s an opening on the abdomen that lets waste out of the body. In some cases it’s done temporarily, but the location of my cancer, a sarcoma that had snuggled up to my bootyhole 🙈🍑, meant that had to be closed off permanently. The tradeoff is I get to live. Sweet deal, right?

Living with Sugi has required some adjustment, not only physically, but mentally & emotionally. Nearly a year passed between receiving the news I would need an ostomy and Sugi’s arrival, and what really helped me prepare was reading, watching and learning from my fellow ostomates online. I learned that having an ostomy doesn’t prevent you from living a happy and fulfilled life. There are ups and downs, but that’s ok. And personally, adapting to life with Sugi has gone better than I expected. So for those of you who just got an ostomy, or will get one soon, don’t worry. You got this. 🫶🫶

Hi everyone! I just wanted to share an update on how we are doing. After receiving the news I had a benign tumor, genetic testing showed that I actually have a very rare kind of sarcoma, a type of cancer that grows in connective tissue. Sarcomas are already rare, but apparently I had to take it to the next level, with a very unique variety. I will be starting chemotherapy in the upcoming days, with the hope that the cancer will shrink. It’s been quite scary, and my emotions have been all over the place after receiving the news. I’ve learned to always keep #kleenex nearby 😅 But I’m also grateful for all the love and support I’ve received from family and friends, & especially from my husband, @foollifetime ❤️I’ve got a tough journey ahead of me, but will try to carry a lot of hope along the way. And if I drop it, there is going to be a bossy dachshund reminding me to pick it up again. 🐾🥰

When we spoke our wedding vow of “in sickness and in health” neither of us expected the sickness part now. It was something far off, when social media shares a memory from 40 years ago. 😆 But here we are. You held my hand when I first heard those terrible words, “we found something,” and have never let go. 🤝 You stayed by my side through all the trips to the hospital, distracting me with boardgames between all the scans & examinations. You kept reminding me that whatever the outcome, we were in this together, and you would help me fight. We shared a huge sigh of relief when I was told the tumor was benign. We’re still not sure what the future holds now, but I hope to one day beat you in Monopoly. Thank you for letting me win at Battleship 😘🫶Happy Anniversary!

For those catching up, I was hospitalized for a pulmonary embolism last month, but at the same time doctors found a large mass in my abdomen. The two are unrelated. It’s just a coincidence that one led to the discovery of the other. As it turns out, I have an incredibly rare type of benign tumor #aggressiveangiomyxoma , but it’s difficult to operate and for now doctors have advised a “wait and see” approach. In the meantime I’m feeling ok. I wouldn’t have even known about the tumor otherwise since it’s not affecting my health. I’m taking meds for the pulmonary embolism but I’m no longer experiencing any symptoms.

Kinkaku-ju temple, officially Rukuon-ji in Kyoto, Japan. The impressive exterior is created with gold leaf. Visiting this was one of the highlights from our recent trip to Japan.
