Long caption alert! 💙 Cyanotype print I made in my parents backyard for @annale0nard’s debut album cover (of @sarabstewart’s fantastic original image) 💙 It’s been a dream of mine to work on art direction + creative strategy for an artist I admire, endlessly thankful for the trust! The record, Paint it Blue, is incredibly special + one of my favorites of the year. (Unbiased)

Anna explains the story best: “When my mom was sick and my grandpa and i moved in to take care of her, he wanted to do something to give her a bit of joy before starting treatment. his idea was to paint the bedroom he was staying in blue—to bring a bit of brightness to dark days ahead.

something to note about my grandpa… is that he’s color blind... so this shade of blue was a bit intense haha! think of a bright blue with a greenish tint, deep and vibrant…TOO vibrant for the walls haha. we made a few jokes about the shade, but i struggled to separate this act from the terrible sadness that moved him to do it. in a way it was him bargaining. “if i do this, something could change. maybe her odds will change.”

but clearly, they didn’t. my mom is gone. his oldest daughter. the bright color of that room is suffocating in my memory: a reminder that no matter how much we try to beautify our suffering, it won’t change the outcome.

but i do think that making this album has changed MY life’s outcome, though. this album is my attempt to beautify the worst season of my life and therefore, survive it. this is me painting it blue. nothing will bring my mother back or save young anna from an abusive relationship. but making art does help me understand it. what if we painted it blue?

so when @adamwxrd reached out to help me with the artistic vision behind the album & how to promote it, he mentioned making a cyanotype as the cover. his ideas continually changed the course of this album’s look and feel—forever grateful for him.

when he came up with this, i of course gasped and giggled and kicked my feet because DUH!!! there was no better way to show the meaning-making aspect of this project than to literally make it blue, blur my imperfections, change myself. it just seemed so obvious. so we did it!” taken in Virginia Beach, Virginia by @adamwxrd

From standing against the barricade at a @sigurros show at 16 to getting lost in @bjork’s experimentation via tumblr, Icelandic artists expanded and shaped my idea of creativity just as I was developing my own point of view.

No wonder a tiny island of less than 400,000 people could produce art so outsized with a canvas this beautiful. Forever grateful to experience Iceland’s gifts firsthand, alongside my legend @gregdward 🫶 taken in Iceland by @adamwxrd
