Bodily Autonomy is Human Right.

Abortion is essential to ensuring that people can control their own bodies, lives and future. Essential.

Raise your voice.

Join @rise4abortionrights @vdayorg @one_billion_rising  @plannedparenthood  @moveon  @womensmarch @weareultraviolet and more to send a strong message that abortion access must be protected and supported.

Sign the petition (bit.ly/3vRNoRG) and join a rally on Saturday, 14-May to stand up for #abortionaccess

We can't let this roll over us. again.

Half the country hasn't effectively had the right to control their bodies - even with Roe. Rights without access are bullshit - worse they're weapons of control. It's been long enough.

"...imagine a world in which people's human rights are respected and protected when they make decisions about whether to become a parent." (p.6)

I'm reading Reproductive Justice, An Introduction, by Loretta J. Ross and Rickie Solinger and thinking about what my sign should say on Saturday, May 14th at the NYC Rally & March @rise4abortionrights

It's time to move past the concept of individual choice. It's simply too narrow to cover what's at stake here.

Even while Roe v Wade has been intact the last almost-50 years, all across the country restrictions and discrimination prevent women who don't have the financial means to get around these illegitimate obstacles, from getting the healthcare they need and deserve.

You can tell me it's my choice, but if I don't have reasonable, safe and equitable access, what do I have?

More importantly, what don't I have?

And why not?

Self-serving dogma has interfered with democracy and our basic human rights for long enough: everyone is entitled to healthcare, safety, dignity. Everyone.

Bodily autonomy is the basis of a free society.

We should have that in the U.S. — all states, all bodies.

Our inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

It's on all of us to make it so — each in our own ways. Standing around listening to speakers in a crowd, marching on a Saturday afternoon - this is not for everyone.

If you were to attend though: what would your sign say?

"Here's the thing, guys.

It doesn't matter.

It doesn't matter when life begins.

It doesn't matter whether a fetus is a human being or not.

That entire argument is a red herring, a distraction, a subjective and unwinnable argument that could not matter less.

It doesn't matter whether we're talking about a fertilized egg, or a fetus, or a baby or a five year old, or a Nobel Prize winning paediatric oncologist.

NOBODY has the right to use your body, against your will, even to save their life, or the life of another person.

That's it.

That's the argument.

You cannot be forced to donate blood, or marrow, or organs, even though thousands die every year, on waiting lists.

They cannot even harvest your organs after your death without your explicit, written, pre-mortem permission.

Denying women the right to abortion means we have less bodily autonomy than a corpse.

New York State Senate bill S8779 provides that NY courts will not issue subpoenas in connection with out-of-state abortion proceedings. Fiscal implications: NONE.

This bill would prohibit courts from cooperating with out-of-state civil
and criminal cases that stem from abortions that took place legally
within their borders. Most states have enacted some form of the Uniform
Interstate Depositions and Discovery Act which simplifies the process
for litigants to take depositions and engage in discovery with people
from another state. New York could protect their providers from anti-abortion state investigations by passing a law exempting abortion providers from the interstate discovery and interstate witness subpoena laws.

As states across the country roll back abortion rights and access, New
York continues to pass progressive policies that expand access to reproductive care. This bill is another tool to help New York thwart interstate investigations to combat state policies that attempt to ban abortions and punish providers beyond their borders.

This is one of two bills currently in the state senate:

https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2021/s8779

https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2021/S8778

It's quick and easy to let your state senator know where you stand.

That's right - it wasn't until we passed the Reproductive Health Act in 2019 that abortion was codified into NYS law, meaning we removed abortion language from the penal code and established a right to the procedure under the public health laws. Protecting us from being subject to the current SCOTUS threat against us.

I was shocked to hear this back in 2018 when I found myself in proximity to activists working to correct this oversight, and then in 2019, not long after we passed the RHA, I went back to focusing on my own life situation. As if my life wasn't entangled in a world where neither public nor private spaces have been intentionally designed to expect, respect and support women. Not as an add-on. Not an extra cost. Normal.

If you're a fellow New Yorker, we're not done yet on this topic. See the next and previous post for two things you can do right now, online, to help us keep moving in the direction of reproductive justice for everyone.

The NYS Senate has a website where you can easily show your support for bill S8778 that protects NYS abortion providers who provide healthcare to anyone who comes to us from an abortion-denying-state.

New York State Senate bill S8778 Provides certain legal protections for providers of legal abortions in this state; prohibits arrest and investigation. Fiscal implications: NONE.

This bill would prohibit law enforcement from cooperating with anti-abortion states' investigations regarding abortions that took place legally. The intent of this legislation is to keep law enforcement agencies of the provider's home state from becoming a cooperating arm of the
antiabortion state's investigating apparatus.

https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2021/S8778

This is more than clicktivism. This is letting your senator know where you stand.

Passing this bill is crucial to the care of countless women who will come to NY for the healthcare they deserve.

It's quick and easy to do and your voice matters. We need everybody. We always have. It's just that now, more of us can feel it.

IN THE FUTURE OUR ASIAN COMMUNITY IS SAFE
by Jess X. Snow

"If sanctuary for a queer migrant is neither a place nor a nation on Earth then I carve a permanent sanctuary in my work. Through film, large-scale murals, street art interventions, community collaboration, youth art education, augmented reality, and poetry, I strive to create a home for people of color with traumas surrounding anti-asian violence, queerness, sexual assault, migration, and state violence." — an excerpt from the Artist Statement for IN THE FUTURE OUR ASIAN COMMUNITY IS SAFE by Jess X. A little bit of wander from TriBeCa into Chinatown yesterday afternoon-evening. Spring in the city. You can’t see it here, but streets were teeming with people OUTSIDE among EACH OTHER…still a new post-lockdown experience, with that reset-button’s-been-pushed (I think?) vibe.

We were on a mission for ramen, but also…I think I need to reset my city-walking, art-viewing self to a generally S L O W E R speed. Gonna come back for a proper experience 🧡 #reconnaissance

“To forgive is not just to be altruistic. It is the best form of self-interest. It is also a process that does not exclude hatred and anger. These emotions are all part of being human. You should never hate yourself for hating others who do terrible things: the depth of your love is shown by the extent of your anger.” — Bishop Desmond Tutu, as quoted by Brené Brown in Rising Strong: The Reckoning. The Rumble. The Revolution.

What I love about this is the PROCESS anddddd the understanding that emotions are part of being human.

Emotions are an EXPERIENCE; they provide information, perform a service, are INTEGRAL to us BEING who we are.

And they are (as we are, as is every aspect of human being) much more complex than GOOD feeling, BAD feeling.

...about y/our hatred and anger

It’s not just forgiveness that is a process.
First, you/we need to deal with y/our hatred and anger.

You want to go THROUGH them not around them. By through them, I mean: engaging openly, even if tenuously or irritably, getting curious, quieted enough to really be in it with them: to make sense of what they’re about. No drive-by assumptions that it’s JUST LIKE LAST TIME, no papering over them, burying them in walls, exalting them or pretending they don’t exist (or that they aren’t what they are). Which brings me to the part that makes me uneasy about this quote: DECIDING what is a terrible thing that ANOTHER is doing is also complex, and requires consideration.

Who gets to say?

Of course, that’s rhetorical, no one categorically gets to say. Not in life, where change is the only constant. The scorecard you’re using may no longer apply. You HAVE TO ASK the question every time. Is it terrible? Is my hatred warranted? My anger? What does this mean for us? You, who I hate, am so angry at, and me, who…

Is there anywhere to go from here?
and maybe not today.

Just keep asking...
